Trigger finger

About a month ago I woke up with a trigger finger on my middle finger on my right hand, I have had this kind of thing happen of the years but this time it is very painful, and just aches all this time. My worry’s being I can’t grip my fly rod without it being a sharp pain. Anyone out there have any way to ease the pain?

Went the surgery route once that eliminated the pain and locking. But, never felt like I could grip with the same feelings as before. Fast forward and tried a plastic brace for several months that disallows any bending that might continue inflammation. The brace along with daily exercises seems to have done a better job than the surgery! Every body is different and I am not a Ortho Surgeon. Nevertheless, it's always worth trying to avoid invasive procedures if possible. Best of luck.

Discussed some previously here:

Recommend you get an appointment with your GP, and or a referral to an orthopedist. Since seeing my GP I've been getting some relief by splinting and doing passive stretches (the tendon gliding stretches actually exacerbated the problem). I have an appointment with an orthopedist this week. Based on the progress I'm seeing I'm hoping that I can treat this without shots or surgery.

For fly fishing I found that a simple splint on the affected finger only (ring finger for me) was helpful. I definitely had to loosen up my grip and concentrate on the upper and lower leverage points where the hand addresses the cork. I think my casting actually benefited from this change.

That's just my experience so far. Seems like it's a bit different for everyone. I hope you find relief. @Bagman

BTW: I get a bit freaked out when the finger locks into the trigger position -- I'm afraid that something is gonna tear or pull... freaky stuff.

My GP set me up with a referral but the two hr drive plus the bridge fare, and on top of that the told me this first visit, was only a consultation and I would need to make another trip based on what the orthopedic decides on as a treatments. So I tried a splint last night and this looks promising.

Waterproof, easy on-off, and they work fine on Trigger Thumb as well. Leave them on when you sleep and you might wake up with less pain. Also, be sure to take the splint off from time to time and do some simple exercises. I would also give some ice treatments atry to ease the inflammation and thus the pain. Be patient, it takes time.
