Traveling with Flyrods

Regarding Alaska airlines especially when going to Alaska. Carry on!!!!! It is actually the most prestigious piece of equipment. All else can be bought quickly in Alaska. Underwear:pants:shoes etc. but the fly rod. 🤔

I’ve told this story many times and it only happened once to my party. But they checked in tubes of fly rods. Evidently the only thing we could think is they inspected the tubes. Pulled out fly rods but didn’t know how to repact the rod thus busting many eye guides forcing the rod in the tube. Yep two rods down. No issue since… But I always carry on. When traveling for fly fishing these things are my babies and they will be with me. Now that have been able to do both. Above but I prefer under my feet. Have not done it post covid so not sure if new protocol.

I was standing in line at Sea-Tac to go through sec. with my two 7wt rods in rod and reel tubes, one four piece, one three piece, when a TSA guy came up and told me I couldn't take golf clubs on the plane.
I just looked at the guy, with the your stupid go away look, and he did.
I don't fly often but I've never had a problem carrying on my four or three piece rods

I’ve traveled with 3 and 4 piece light SW rods as carryons in the past with no problems. I don’t go to FF destinations per se, but still I often want a rod with me for possibilities and or entertainment. So I sometimes pack a 6pc McFarland 5wt glass rod and a small chest pack in my carry duffel. It’s a comfort to me if nothing else. Easier than packing a golf bag.
