Tippet spool management

Let's see: asparagus and butter, asparagus in soup, asparagus on the bbq, steak asparagus and blue cheese, asparagus gumbo, asparagus and shrimp; only six more and I'm set.......
Let’s not forget asparagus gohan, asparagus in miso soup and I’m very fond of sautΓ©ed asparagus in an omelette….

Pickled asparagus….

Roasted asparagus, prosciutto wrapped asparagus Benedict, asparagus & shiitake stir fry, asparagus in fried rice, asparagus cruditΓ©s, asparagus ice cream (okay, that’s extreme)…

As others have said, rubber bands are a cheap effective option. If you want a more boujee option for bigger spools, the bands that they use around Smartwool socks packaging are great for larger spools. Nice socks if you need some. A bit on the pricey side but can be found on sale a lot of places.

I get it that tippet spools sometimes leave a lot to be desired regarding "management", for me especially Maxima (rubber bands for me) but Ultrawire spools come with a removeable "cap" (for lack a the proper term) that I've found to be good at keeping the wire in place. When tying and I need wire, I remove the cap, cut off a length of wire and run the spool's tag through the caps teeth and put the cap back on while keeping a bit of tension on the wire. Works for me.

I have one spool of thread with the cap that you are talking about. I tried looking online for a supplier of the caps so I could get some for my other spools and so far have had no luck.

Though pricey, I did find these:

Bruce - Like Ultra Wire, UTC threads come with the caps.

British Omelette: Parboiled asparagus (or leftover) with Swiss cheese. Hollandaise if extravagant.

I figured out a way to make spool tenders that are almost indistinguishable from the ones that already come with tippet spools from brands like Rio (the ones with a small eyelet in the elastic band, and the band has a loop in it that you can grab or put your finger through).

Supplies:
- 2mm internal diameter micro eyelets that are 4mm long
- 2mm eyelet ram/setting tool and matching base
- 1/4” wide elastic band

Each of the three items above can be purchased on something like Amazon for about $6 each. The quantities that I got come out to about $0.12 for each tender I make, or $0.08 per if I ignore the cost of the one time purchase of the eyelet setter tools.

In the first image above, the tender on the top is from Rio and the one on the bottom is the one I made. My band is slightly wider and has a larger eyelet of 2 mm hold diameter, whereas Rio uses a narrower 5mm band and 1.5mm eyelet.

I actually prefer the slightly wider band, and I used a 2 mm eyelet just because it was the size I guessed before I later got my calipers and measured what Rio was using.

My setup:

Also made a scrappy video showing how I make them:

Asparagus blue bands (or other veggie bands) is what I use for spools that don’t come with tippet bands. Actually prefer the veggie bands because they provide more tension when pulling tippet out and less prone to snag and leak tippet out. I never thought of putting an eyelet in one tho? πŸ€”

Double-sided "hook & Loop"(Velcro) tape. Cut to length, cut to width, done. Buy at Home Depot, Amazon, Harbor Freight..........lots of sources. I use it for so many purposes that I buy it in 35 foot lengths.

I really like this, makes it easy to pull off the desired length, no opening and closing zippered pockets on the river
