The headline is a little deceptive. The fleet caught 28,000 chinook in 2023-24, but then were given a bycatch cap of 9,000, which they easily managed to stay under. Which just goes to show that bottom trawlers can be relatively selective if they want to be, they just need to be forced to want to fish selectively. I strongly suspect that if they were given a cap of say 50 fish for each boat, they could stay under that too. There’s massive amounts of technology out there to do it.
