Some scary chatter on the internet the past few years about the Lone Star Tick and its 3 frightening pathogens. Now it might be migrating north to parts of the PNW? Some conspiracies claim tick filled boxes are being air dropped by unknown entities that don't want you to eat meat. Bill Gates, Morrissey?? Oh yes, if you are bitten you may contract Alpha-Gal Syndrome, which will make you allergic to red meat forever. You've been warned.

I have been talking to friends about the prospects of being allergic to meat. If I had to chose between permanent Erectile dysfunction and a red meat allergy…I would need some time to think.
 
It's been a gnarly tick season here in the Gorge. Never had an issue on the John Day before but on our float in April my dog was getting dozens a day. Got home and they were in full bloom in Hood River, much worse than anybody here could remember. It was a really warm river with almost no freezing, so maybe there wasn't the normal die off, but it was way worse than normal.

That said I'm not buying any conspiracy theories. The sad part is for the first time in my life I have to question who is running the CDC and how they are filtering science to fit an agenda.
 
Alpha gal is really nasty and somewhat ironic given it is or was most prevalent in TX, a beefier state. It has unfortunately done a number on a few folks as docs are still unfamiliar with it.

Tick borne diseases are true bastards but still lag by the skeeter ones. As thing get more toasty here, we will be screwed but that’s not really a thing so carry on, all’s good.

I agree with both thoughts. I still give more credence to the CDC than conspiracy theories.

PS: not going 'there'...

Our oldest grandaughter, a senior at Oregon State studying to be an epidemiologist, has been part of a research grant for the past two years studying Oregon ticks, her job to set tick traps in designated Oregon forests. The number of captured ticks that have tested test positive in the lab for Lyme disease remains extremely low.
This summer she'll be in Colorado performing mosquito research. I personally vouched she will find plenty.
 
Hmmmm . . . Now I know what motivated me to re-apply permethrin to my light-colored anti-tick shirts/pants/"armor" today.
 
Ever fished Quail Lake? One of our fishing partners brought his springer. He was actually a pretty good fishing dog (which I RARELY say), but the poor guy had like 20 ticks on him by the time we were done. Between that and all the ticks on us his owner ended up buck naked in the uncovered bed of his truck right there in the parking lot. :ROFLMAO: Tick check!!
I thought the draws and canyons east of Goldendale had high tick numbers. Quail was on another level.
 
Worst I ever saw them was at Hutchinson Lake and south of Sprague Lake, but ticks are pretty much everywhere now. Birds and other critters have helped spread them.

The known actual facts of plum Island research read like some of the most creative conspiracy theories. Radioactive ticks with weaponized pathogens and such. It's like reading declassified research on LSD and mk ultra. It's all good though Pfizer is coming out with a new Lyme disease vaccine and you can always just eat the lab grown meat allegedly.

Now if you'll excuse me I need to suit up and patrol the farm for bill gates tick bombs with lasers on their backs that make you gay.

I think she has a fascinating job. The implications of this type of work and the real possibilities of breakthrough that impacts humans positively is very high. A buddy of mine has Lyme. He's always reading research and sending me articles. The systems for transmission etc are totally fascinating. I wish her well on her work and am grateful folks are studying things like this.

Yeah my boss got it last year in Wisconsin. They caught it early, but I want no part of that, ever.

The thing about ticks being worse when our winters aren't as cold.... Not sure how that works. Anyone who's ever spent time in the woods in Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, or really anywhere in the northern midwest to northeast knows just how bad the ticks are there. Like, guaranteed tick on you if you so much as step off a trail into some grass. Those places freeze way harder and longer than here.

I was in Wisconsin last November. It was in the 20s and I got a tick on me.
