The Trouble with Fly Casting

There is a lot about English language that is just arbitrary that doesn't make linguistic sense even when broken down to root elements. So it's fitting, considering the arbitrary nature of our language to just call what we do "fly casting" and "fly fishing." People understand what you mean, and at its core, that is the purpose of language.

for sure, my fly casting by any other name would suck as much..

chucking string is closer to the 'truth' than casting flies..

The truth is that the mechanics of the forward cast are exactly the same with a fly and with a spin rod. The only difference is that the weight is distributed along the length of the line rather than concentrated in the lure. The most efficient casters are the people who can time their forward cast so that it starts when all of the line is straight back, and then accelerate forward with the rod tip moving along that same line as much as possible.

The whole rod loading thing, that’s bollocks. Try anchoring your fly rod in a vice, pulling back on 30’ of fly line and letting go and see just how far it goes. Fly rods just can’t store enough energy for it to be important.
