The thumbs up is my new thing

The power thumbs up (PTU) is my favorite of all thumbs up variants. One of the keys of the PTU is a hard stop - similar to an effective casting stroke, you really need to accelerate into a hard stop. The beauty of the PTU is that it can be supplemented with a wink or a nod to really convey approval at that next/higher level.

Some text book examples of the power thumbs up from some of the greatest out there - note the acceleration into the hard stop.

When you drain a 20 foot birdie putt and walking to the hole to get your ball...

I wave at people on the back roads here in Montana. A two finger wave with my right hand on the top of the Steering wheel. But only on the gravel, dirt, and goat roads. The rest of the time I use the middle finger of my right hand. To the stupid drivers here in Montana. And their are quite a few of them here.

Best to use both if you have little tiny thumbs.

When I drive our jeep, we have the V or 3 finger jeep wave. My 20 year old made fun of me for doing it the other day when we were out together. Then a few minutes later a guy passed us in a jeep and gave me the jeep wave. I was too busy chatting with son to see, but my son saw him. Said the sad look of disappointment on the guys face was heartbreaking and he'll never make fun of me again. :ROFLMAO:

Yes...
The Jeep wave is not to be forgotten here.
The unspoken bond is acknowledged via the 3 fingers, and rarely goes unanswered.
Your son learned a valuable lesson that day.

Something I noticed when I moved here is how some Americans give you a nonchalant "yep" or "mhm", in response to you saying thanks. I mainly noticed it in dining scenarios, when I thanked the waiter.

It is so weird. I thought they were pissed off about something. It's not just me, either; many foreigners that I know have noticed the same thing.

Edit: To clarify, they are not actually in a bad mood and this is just how they respond to gratitude. It's some kind of strange cultural thing.

These are called zoomers, or young millenials. They are just pissed at you for not giving them everything in life for nothing. Also their current job probably has no purpose in life for them.

I haven't noticed any correlation with age. It seems to be a cultural thing. I feel like it might be folks that are from a rural area or some particular part of America.

I like to give the jeep wave......they always look at me funny. Haven't had my Wrangler in over 12 years and I drive a Prius.

More so the attitude of "this is my job, you don't need to thank me 50 times during a meal" and your description of gen Z is pretty opposite of my observations (150ish students in my classroom per year for the last 8 years)

I love the sideways thumb as a non-verbal "all good with you?" A la Commodus in Gladiator.

Do they respect you... as opposed to having work for you?
