The "Caught a fish on my first cast!" lucky day thread...

I thought it'd be neat to start a thread for photos of any first-cast fish we catch. No matter how long I toss bugs around, or how easy the fishing is at any spot, I'm still secretly delighted to get one on the first cast.

I don't expect that this thread will be filled with lunkers and "fish of a lifetime". But on the other hand, I'm sure we all have a few more exciting first-cast stories over the years. So if you've got a fish to share from the past, feel free to post it.

Otherwise, just take a quick snap any time you get a first-cast fish and drop it in the thread. Otherwise it'll just be me posting dozens of small wild cascade trout and dirtbag pond bluegill.

This was years ago and not fly fishing. My friend and I had a weekly ritual of meeting at a certain beach and fishing for coho on Friday evenings. On one of these days she and another friend had been fishing all day without any luck. I got off of work and rushed to catch the ferry to meet them. I arrived right at high tide. They were talking about how the fishing sucked and nobody was catching anything as I was gearing up. I explained that the tide just turned and it should be getting good. For some reason I botched my first cast and only sent my lure out about 20 feet or so. I reeled in as normal and BAM, fish on! Turned out to be one of the nicest (wild, when you could keep them) coho of the year for me and it was absolutely stuffed with shrimp. For the rest of the year I had many of the locals following my technique of putting shrimp scented smelly jelly on their rotator setups. 🤣 My friend still talks about that night to this day. There is a photo on a broken down laptop. Might have to try to get those pics off it one day.

I did learn a lesson from this experience. Always fish your bad casts through. You never know.

1st cast NF Umpqua, was below fly water and below whistler park at friends dads cabin. It was a small steelhead or very large resident, was kinda darkish out still so couldn't see it very well and too dark for pics, but still first cast
