Different game back then. We have almost reached the 7 on 7 flag football era. I mean if you go back in the day those hits are illegal and would be flagged and the physical abuses on receivers and. Qbs would be flagged today too. Back then they hit the QB and sometimes violently. Brutal yet gorgeous in its own footballing world back then.
Use to be a saying ‘ Might as well catch it because your gonna get clobbered no matter what, but if you catch a couple they start backing off.

and there was The Assassin, Jack Tatum, whose hits on receivers drove his coach John Madden to describe them as 'de-cleaters', a phrase Madden brought along into the broadcast biz.
