That High Lake Keeps Calling Me

What is it about this lake fishing?, Up until this year I have not fished a lake in over 20 years and had no inclination to but this year i have fished 2 different lakes. by now i am usually back floating my local river but this lake fishing keeps pulling me back especially this one high dessert lake. What is it about sitting or standing in a boat in the middle of a body of water mostly by myself with the occasional wave to another passing boater or the occasional "how's it going" again by a passing boater. Am i becoming antisocial or do i enjoy floating and fishing by myself trying to figure out what the fish are going to take. Hell i am now even looking at other lakes in the area to try my hand on. Anyway back to a certain well known high lake i spent another productive day on;

When the afternoon wind came up i had to dodge a few floaters but all in all another great day on a lake

That is one big high lake, and those are some good looking trout, well fed. For me it’s the seasonal rush to the river around opener that keeps me away, like a gym in January.

But I notice too, I am enjoying lakes with increased frequency so I thought about it. More often do I come across ass hats on the river than the lake. Maybe people don’t understand the out and down motion of a river swinger but you have to bark or else you’re screwed for the day. If quiet they’ll keep squeezing you. So, I usually end up a great big, ready to pounce dick head on our rivers (a feeling I never get on lakes even with crowds).

I end up having to bring toys such as a hand-me-down cane pole spinning rod tucked in back and a chunky “lure” for the folk that don’t get the memo.

As a mostly converted lake guy I find lake fishing much more laid back. Their is no need to get up 2 hours before daylight to get the boat launched first while getting the pullout truck repositioned. You don't need to worry about the parade of boats or the colour of the water or the volume of water or a new tree across the river.
That being said, most lake fish are measure in inches while the river fish are measure in pounds. Trade offs.

I have been a hike-in lake fisher for decades.
Many days i have set up the boat in the dark and rowed out on the water and fell asleep til the warmth from the sun wakes me. Then i might fish or sleep some more. I am in no hurry, and the nearest person is many miles away.
The days on alpine lakes are the best of times.

That sounds so good. Add a little joe in a thermos upon sun up and I’m quickly adding that to my summer have-to’s. Have just the right lake in mind.
