Thanksgiving on the Trinity River

Spent the Thanksgiving weekend on the Trinity River fishing for steelhead again this year. This will be my 5th or 6th year doing it and the weather finally worked in my favor. The rain came before Tday this year and moved quite a few fish up river. Was able to land 8 on the swing and enjoyed some great scenery. One of the fish I caught, hatchery, had a cord with writing looped behind its dorsal fin. No readers on so not sure what it said but later looked it up and saw it was worth some monetary reward. Guess I should have cut that one off. Oh well. Ate some great food and drank some good wine by the fire with friends.

Russell

Hope everyone had a great Turkey Day.

The Trin has always been good to me. Is that bbq place good? Do they have a Texas style brisket that does not need sauce?

Did you check out Lewiston Lake while you were up there? It can be fantastic this time of year. Like 90% of the fish move up to the skinny top 1/3 of the lake to spawn/try to spawn. I had a 40 fish day wading and never even moved out of the spot.

Glad you had a great trip, Lewiston is one of my happy places

Will have to check out the lake on another trip. Sounds fun.

Nice to see people swinging the Trin, not nymphing it. Congrats on you success!

Weird they would have rewards for fishing an anadromous fish river in these days....
I think they are using the reward tags to track hatchery fish movement or something. I don't think they try to promote it as a fish derby.

good memories, spent some time on that river as both a kid and later as an adult, wife and I would stay at The Old Lewiston Inn, fish the Yellow Sally hatch by the hatchery if in the mood for a sure thing.

Wow, offer like that and brisket! We should have a brisket cook off and maybe do a little fishing. I'm itching to get to Austin for some fatty brisket. One of my most memorable days was racing at CoTA in the morning, Franklin's for lunch and landing a 35lb small mouth buffalo on a 5wt rod fishing for bass in the river.

I second the great looking brisket! Reminds me of home. I love smoked meat and fishing and I live on the Trinity. Hit me up if you're ever looking for someone to fish with that can run shuttle.
The first two years I fished the trinity during thanksgiving for steelhead I was solo drifting. Where were you then.... :ROFLMAO: Have some good stories figuring out a new river by myself. Right, NO Left...
The indian creek lodge had a chef and was serving some pretty high end meals and was providing a shuttle as well. Would get back and drink whiskey with the clients of the guides staying there and have a nice Ribeye...

Brisket cook off and fishing sounds great! Unfortunately, My Big Steel Keg smoker has not been used since Moving to the Trinity 3+ years ago. My backyard borders a designated wilderness area. It's hard enough to keep the bears out of the orchard, a fat juicy brisket putting off that delicious smoke aroma would surely spell disaster. I've got to build a bear proof smoker area before firing it up, and if I do that before building the pergola the wife's been asking for she will absolutely lose her shit.

Now that's what I call shuttle service! If you ever find yourself in another solo drifting predicament I'd be more than happy to accompany you. I'm in Big Bar so I'm right in the middle of multiple good take out spots.
