Last week Krusty and I were on a lake where we expected a lot of big fish. It was warm and calm out and conditions were not the best but we managed a few anyway and he got his biggest fish of the season at 24''. It was good fishing but just not great like it had been in the spring. Fly of the day was a pumpkin head which produced the most and biggest fish.
Before leaving the lake he gave me one of those pumpkin heads and I used it today on BFL-which is code for big fish lake. It is a hard lake for me at times and I have had my ass handed to me more than once there. I almost didn't go today after being outside last night with an almost full moon glaring and daytime temps near 70. I decided early that I would go anyway and if I caught a decent fish would leave early and come home and do some yard work. Getting there I was greeted by a lake in glassy calm-another bad sign-but launched anyway with aforementioned pumpkin head attached to a Type 3 line. About 10 minutes out I hooked a fish that felt like the biggest of the year by far and the first fish to put me in the backing in a long time. It was out at the end of the fly line doing impressive jumps and making strong runs. After what seemed like forever I finally got it close enough to see just how massive it was and eventually landed it in a net that was too small for the job. It turned out to be about a half inch shy of 24'' so I'll call it 23'' but was exceptionally deep and heavy, the biggest I have landed around here in several years.
The year is quickly winding down here on the frozen tundra with snow in the forecast for next week. There are still about 3 lakes I want to hit before the season ends but I am waiting for some rain to make the long dusty drives more bearable and also energize the fish somewhat. It should rain tonight, I'm hoping some snow on the mountains will get the fish in the mood.
Thanks again Krusty
