Last spring, I took both of my sons to Back to the Wall Ranch as birthday presents. They had a great time and really appreciated Darc. At breakfast the next morning, my oldest son, Joe, said he wanted to stop by Darc’s shop, The Desert Fly Angler, and get a hat. I told him Darc doesn’t have any hats for sale.
Since Joe really wanted one, as the weeks passed I started thinking about it and then started looking into designing a hat myself and getting some made. I tried some online sites but didn’t like what I was seeing and I didn’t like that I couldn’t try the hat on.
After a couple months I saw a shop in Ellensburg that designed shirts and jackets. I went in to see if they did hats also. Well, they did hats and they had lots to choose from. I came back with my sample designs, and photos of Darc’s fly, the Jim Beam. I came back again with a sample of the fly itself. Eventually, they had a design I really liked and a very comfortable hat. The fly on the hat even looks shiny. I should add, the hat isn’t just comfortable, it’s totally cool too.
I gave a hat to each of my boys. Joe said, “Wow, Darc has hats now.” I said, “Well yes, he has hats now, he just doesn’t know it yet.” Yesterday I went to visit Darc in his shop. I wore my hat and brought him a couple. It pleased me so much that he liked the hat.
I have known Darc since the 90’s. With what seems like almost no effort, he can cast just short of a city block. He is an exceptionally good fisherman. Most of all he is one of the best human beings I have ever met. Thanks Darc for being you.
