swim bait mod

Steelhead
There are these great plastic swimbaits called Zoom Flukes. They have a cavity cut in the body which makes them fragile once a fish eats them so they are kinda of used for 1 or 2 fish then dead. But the cavity really makes the body wiggle. I have experimented with putting a glass bead noismaker in the body cavity and if I keep it small and up by the jighead most of the wiggle is preserved. I the noisemaker makes the bait more effective in my local water. I have tried tying the noismaker in with fly tying thread. I have tried gluing it with RTV. RTV does not stick to plastic swimbaits while tying thread distorts the swimbait body more than I like.

Does anyone modify their swimbaits and what ideas do you guys have to capture the noisemaker into the swimbait body cavity?

I don't have an answer, but I'm looking forward to your creative ideas and outcome.

Swim baits can be extremely effective. There is a product called "unibutter" that uses the scent of Urchin roe to increase catch rates. A ziplock bag with some of this stuff, with Swim Baits (or any other plastics) thrown in can drastically increase catch rates. For me "Swim Baits" generally mean paddle tail plastics, carefully attached to a lead head jig hook.... but the term goes much farther , encompassing very large plastic replicas of stocked trout to get trophy Bass. Also, I used to always apply some supper glue to the hook ..that made these plastic lures far more durable. I like the "cavity innovation" but, in my experience, the color was the key to success. Dozens of colors to choose from...but there always seemed to be one color with a specific name ( Blue Anchovy for example) that just DOMINATED.

Do people flyfish with swim baits? Seems like casting would be an issue.

Not that I know of but I suppose you could with say the right shooting head and short leader and a hook threaded swimbait as opposed to a jig head swimbait. I just asked the question on this forum because it seems to be filled with real fishermen who fish. I 90% flyfish and also do it one of the most esoteric ways possible skating dry flies with long speyrods to steelhead. But I'm not a flyfishing snob. There are some forums you mention conventional fishing you get "tar and feathers." This forum is a cool place. Threads could be flyfishing to motorizing your stand up paddle board!
