Non-Fly Surf perch

SilverFly

Legend
Wasn't expecting much on a popular tourist beach, but at least I'm on the board. Managed 2 smallish redtails and 1 walleye perch. No luck tossing a 1/4 jig, so switched to bait. Of course nothing beats sandshrimp, but Berkeley Gulp sandworms are SO much easier, and they catch fish. Wind permitting I might try the bugstick here tomorrow.

Also saw a barely alive ratfish washed up between the rocks. Never know what you'll find on the beach!

How'd the ratfish cook up?
Didn't occur to me to take it back and cook it, but gotta admit now I'm a little curious. ;)

As for the perch, wasn't enough to bother making tacos, so just salt/peppered and sautéed in olive oil. Shared some samples with family on Juanitas nacho chips, which was polished off pretty quick.

I’ve done well for surf perch using unweighted shrimpy flies on gear set ups.
They certainly stay on better than real sand shrimp.

Flies on spin and/or casting gear can be killer for a lot of fish.
There’s a guy in Scotland who fishes sinking bombarda ‘floats’ with a trailing clouser/sand Lance patterns for sea runs browns in the firth of Clyde, worth a Google. He gets some lovely fish. It would be stellar for SRCs/salmon here. I’ve toyed with the idea for this silver season. Gear slinging dirt bagging but with a fly for a shred of credibility…maybe, in my mind anyway 😎

There is a guy that does just that for coho out here on a popular beach. He does very well.
