I’d like to see the guy who spent millions of his own money trying to build a new arena so the Sonics would come back only to get screwed by the city. That would be Chris Hansen. Probably won’t happen though.

Doubt any pro anybody is looking to contribute 9.9% to the state regularly for the new millionaire tax.....
Sure nobody likes to pay taxes but every other NBA team is in a state with an income tax other than Texas.

Been listening to a bunch of NBA talking heads chat expansion the last few days. More than expected against expansion. Key argument: other issues to address first: tanking, betting, load management: I’ll concede those points. The other: water down the product. Don’t buy that one. NBA has not expanded in 20+ years and how much has the world’s population grown in that time? I think we can support a couple more team and have the same quality play now as we did in 2004 when Charlotte joined. Not to mention the % of the world’s population that are NBA candidates has grown significantly in that time as well. What percentage of NBA players are foreign born in 2026 including maybe 2-3 of the top 5 in 2026 (Luka, Wemby and Shai) compared to 2004? Watered down 2026 to 2029 when the new teams start, play..yeah, maybe. Historically watered down, nope not buying it.

I very much want expansion, into the Seattle market. I want to say that before I say what I'm going to say, because goddamn i miss the Supes.
If i were an NBA owner, I'd be voting an emphatic NO. The NBA no longer operates on a butts in seats model. That helps, and it is a part of the equation, but it's a pittance compared to the tv/streaming revenue, and in person revenue is incredibly expensive to generate, comparatively. I would argue the NBA already has a large chunk of the PNW market. Not as much as it could have, but enough of it to justify not needing a team in the Seattle area.
Owning an NBA team is a goldmine, especially for teams that receive revenue. To dilute your revenue share by 7 % (the cost of adding two teams) then revenue would need to grow comparatively, or arguable more. I don't think adding Seattle and Vegas move the needle that much.
However, building new international leagues? NBA Africa, Europe, etc.... that's a horse of a different color. Those are markets the NBA is barely receiving revenue from. If I had the vote, id be voting to invest my money in that.
Maybe franchise fees fund international expansion that the current ownership is hesitant to spend billions on. 2 teams would add 15-20 billion to the owners coffers and maybe they need to take a mortgage out on their golden goose to do it, but I doubt it.
Go supes, bring basketball to Seattle and do it fast, please. But I won't be holding my breath.

I agree to a point. You said it yourself though, butts in seats don’t drive revenue, TV does so why bring in the logistic nightmare of a global league (or multiple leagues) when tvstreaming rights drive $$. Fight for that money overseas while continuing to push the best players from those places here competing in the U.S. Global talent has increased significantly the last few decades but the bulk of the best talent still comes from North America and would likely balk at playing for an NBA organization in other parts of the world, unless the money was off the charts. That means the bulk of the overseas top talent would still be drawn here leaving you with second rate players in a new league fighting for market share against established foreign leagues in Europe, Asia, etc. I say continue to push foreign talent here but sell it everywhere…but more of it through expansion in North America.
Honestly though, I don’t know shit about the economics of the NBA. I just want professional basketball back in Seattle!

Pro athletes these days already have to pay income taxes or entertainment taxes when playing on the road in a state/city that has the tax already in place. Basically, when we do our taxes, and it asks if we worked out of state, they have to say yes. I should have gone to school to be an accountant for professional athletes.

I knew that but until the new supposedly millionaire tax goes into effect in WA none of them have had too, should really make a lot of them happy to have to come here to play......
Oh those poor poor athletes. Let me get out my violin, Seen my cable bill lately. I (or rather we) are paying a big chunk of those salaries without ever attending a game. Sorry no sympathy here.

Name me one major free agent who has EVER come to Seattle where income tax has been the difference? We already overpay for the south Alaska tax, this doesn't actually matter to the players, or the agents who write their contracts.
It very, very, very much matters to those that own the teams and the execs (cough*JohnSchneider*cough) and you may see them rubbing their hands/clutching their pearls over all the lost free agents.
No sympathy for me as well. I doubt this tax will affect many of us! Other things affect us / me and us way more.
