Sun and Snow

The wife and I came back about a week ago from a trip to Wyoming. The trip was more of a getaway than a fishing trip but I did end up attempting some fishing. I say attempting because conditions weren't always conducive to fly fishing but I sure had fun and was able to forget about all my stress back at work. I put on some serious miles across the state.

Devils Tower was beautiful and we hiked a trail around it. From spots on the trail I could see the Belle Fourche River in the distance. I thought this looked like a perfect opportunity to break out the fly rod until I spoke with a ranger who informed me there were no fish in this stretch of the river near Devils's Tower. I'm not sure I believed him but nonetheless I did not do any fishing up here.

This is a river I'll be coming back to with my buddy in July to fish this so more on this place later. It was a little off color this time of year.

I checked out numerous fly shops along the way but I have to give two thumbs up to two of my favorite shops in Wyoming, Flyshop of the Bighorns in Sheridan and North Fork Anglers in Cody. Here are some of the flies I picked up.

This beautiful stretch of water I was told was the home of some nice brookies. I was also informed there are plenty of rattle snakes here in the summer time as well!

After seeing this sign, I finally found my home here in Greybull, WY! My favorite beer!

Some of the lakes were still a wee bit frozen. It was 27 degrees out, but with my puffy keeping me warm, I did try a midge under an adams in an open spot along the edge. However my fly got stuck (frozen) to a piece of ice and I had to free it with a couple of rocks so I decided to sit and enjoy the view while drinking my coffee and smoking a cigar. I then thought to myself what would Swimmy do? So I sat there for a bit more enjoying the gorgeous views I had all to myself. I then went back to the cabin at mid day, where it had warmed up to 36 degrees, and fished there a bit.

The river behind the cabin was pretty low and there weren't any good pools but damn I was fly fishing in Wyoming!

This flyfishing makes one thirsty so I had to take a break.

I finally found a nice spot in Thermopolis that even I could catch fish. I can't wait to head back in a few months at which time I can actually dedicate a lot of time to fishing.

Didn’t know Hamm’s was still out there. I would like to have one for old times sake. Think Hamm’s was the first beer I ever had . I was about 14,
