Stuck spool on Hardy Marquis

The reel is about 4 years old. The spool turns but requires a lot of force; way more than the 'drag' knob on the reel provides. I can't remove the spool either. The release lever moves but the spool is stuck in the frame. I'm doing a warm soap water bath. After that I'll probably try removing the release latch taking care not to lose the spring and make sure that it's actually working. Based on what I've read it sounds like other possible steps are to tap the center with a rubber mallet, or remove the line and do a soak in solvent.

First time working on any click-n-pawl reel, advice links all welcome. Thanks

Sounds like corrosion on parts that were not greased. I’d give them a soaking in a wd40 or equivalent type of solvent that won’t harm aluminum. That’ll get the parts moving.

Then commit to a regime of grease/oil applications, say a couple times a year. I’d purchase some BoeShield for the shaft and thicker style grease for the pawls/gear/spring.

I’ve broken free a couple click and pawls, sometimes you’ll have to polish the shaft a little and chamber it rides in on the spool. The leaf spring(s) is usually the most susceptible to corrosion.

I had that happen to a Ross Colorado a year or two ago. It sticks because of not enough lubricant and the little that remains has largely dried out and evaporated. I'd try gently forcing the spool off the spindle, but if it seems like it's going to break or bend, then remove the latch cover and try to get some WD-40 in between the spindle and bushing. Afterward, keep it lubed and never let that happen again!

Thanks all. Warm soapy water for a couple hours released it. The reel and 'drag' started working as expected and I was able to remove the spool. I cleaned and greased this reel about 9mo ago. Gonna inspect it, if anything looks hinky I'll consider sending it to Archuletta.. otherwise I'll clean it up thoroughly and grease it.
