Stripping baskets

I’m new to the area. I’ve fished a few times for Cutts and Pinks and have determined that a stripping basket would be helpful. I have never used one. Anyone have any preferences for them. I’m looking at an Ecoastal basket from Scientific Anglers. Any thoughts on these or others? Thanks, The New Guy.

A basket is a definite plus in my opinion for beach fishing.
I’ve used LL Bean, Linekurv, Orvis and Take baskets. They all do the job.
I prefer full baskets. I’m not sure I’d enjoy waves sloshing into the open front of my basket, but that is just a personal preference.
Good luck with your decision.

I use one of these - works great and is lightweight. I usually wear it off to the side abit, works well that way and frees up space on my front side. I usually avoid large waves, but the open design drains quickly.

I've been thinking about trying my hand at some surf perch one of these days and am wondering, if I were to fish a single hand rod with a skagit head, would using the same standard line management techniques I would use when fishing a river suffice on the beach? Is a stripping basket really necessary on the beach if you can manage enough loops to get your cast out there?

For me the stripping basket is mostly about keeping my line out of the water by my feet, where seaweed salad wraps around it and waves swirl it around my legs. If you keep all of your line in loops in your hand, maybe you don't need a basket.

For surf perch, stay away from a Skagit system. It won't work in all but the calmest of conditions and even then, not well. Full sink shooting heads work the best there. Yes, you need a stripping basket for that kind of fishing. If you choose to go without, you'll wish you had one real quick.

Right on, thanks for the insight! I was thinking of trying it with a Commando Groove rather than a full floating head, and a 6ips sink tip. Good to know that managing loops won't work in the surf.

PSA: Don't tell your wife you need a stripping basket. At least if she's prone to mockery.

We were out to dinner several years ago discussing Hawaii trip plans. We'd had a couple drinks when I mentioned needing a stripping basket. She looked at me like I had gone mad and said "you need a WHAT?!" After a brief description, I could tell that I was going to regret even mentioning it.

"So, does this stripping basket come with decorations, or do you add plastic daisies and pinwheel later? We can stop by the craft store tomorrow. Oh, and the fabric store to get some sparkly ribbons!"

This went on for what seemed much longer than a few minutes. Tears were streaming down her face and I think she may have peed her pants a little. Needless to say I still don't own one. YMMV.

I too had a discussion with my wife about my need for a “stripping basket”. I unfortunately and mistakenly mentioned my desire for a “stripper basket”. Not good

You can always get them one too! I got my wife a pink one and she loves her stripper!

These work ok if you put something rigid with some kind of spikes to stop the line moving around in the bottom. Otherwise they are a great way to turn your line into a tangled mess on every cast.
You can’t put spikes in the mesh. I like it since I walk and wade, hike and ride bicycle to remote rivers. It is packable. I can’t cast far anyway. Having stripping basket is very beneficial

I use a Linkurv in the sound. I like that it keeps the line completely out of debris/junk, especially on salmon beaches with big rips and lots of junk moving through on occasion.

I use a cheap mesh one I found on Amazon for the boat. I am thinking of upgrading to the one @SpawnFlyFish recommends though.

One way to add spikes to mesh baskets is zip ties. I did that to the cheap one I bought for my boat. Sturdy zip ties through a handful of the mesh openings on the bottom of the basket with the tag end sticking up actually works ok.

I use this basket. Added a belt, and added zip ties to prevent tangles. If I get a chance I'll add a pic
