I grew up in/on the ocean surfing almost every day and spent my early years making lots of life decisions through the lens of “will there be surf there?”

Living up in the “2+ hours one way to surf” portion of the PNW now for >10 years, and trying to juggle wife, kids, high intensity job, etc., has all contributed to way (WAY) less surfing than I did in my first decades of life. While it has slowed the progression of my surfer’s ear (yep - it’s a thing), it has been really hard sometimes to maintain my stoke levels. Long long spells with no surfing.

Last weekend I was jonesing hard to surf. It had been a while. I have a little 5’8 FireWire Seaside with quads just leaning on the wall in my home office, silently judging me for not taking it out. My 5/4/3mm wetsuit was pretty much dead though, so on a whim I told my wife I was out of pocket for the day and headed down to Seaside, OR, and Cleanline Surf shop. The staff at Cleanline was awesome - i have spent a lot of time in surf shops in places near and far and that is a really really good shop.

More important than picking up a new 5/4 and managing to sneak in some surf that day, the real win was that I managed to find my stoke again along the way.

For all those who have a passion for something that recharges their batteries but who may have let it slip toward the bottom of a long list of priorities, be it surfing or more likely on this forum fly fishing or whatever….get on it!* I’m already plotting my next trip to the WA coast, and a longer road trip for surf, and my next trip to warm water barrels, and…….

* Unless you have a passion for crime or something evil. Maybe don’t get on that.

Seaside shop is great. Always stop on my way through to skate parks along the coast. And yeah, I agree time should be made for things other than fishing. I have way too many hobbies and most of which came long after fly fishing. Surfing is one although I am not addicted like most people I know. Skateboarding however……

Josh at Cleanline is as solid as they get, as is Jeff at Moments in PC
My ears never touch water without Doc's Prolugs in them, whether swimming or surfing, stopped the bone growth and ended the infections since adopting them in the 80's
Glad to hear you found that stoke again....and new boards help keep that flame going, along with the occasion destinaton trip.
Tim Stamps, who along with Art Coyler are my go to shapers, recently made me this 10'6 epoxy glider...it is a friggin hoot for summer surf

Sweet board! For many years Todd Kay (TDK) or Rusty were my shapers, but when I moved to Hawaii it got tougher to work 1x1 with those guys. Ever since I have been mixing it up with different shapers, though when I reached out to Rusty a few years ago it was just like the old days hanging with him in his shaping bay - he and I were able to mentally get on same page via phone and email and the resulting board is what I expected.

I am currently plotting a northern Nicaragua trip. Hope I can pull it together…..

Great choice, a stoker for sure...Rusty as well as Russo and Hamon in his shop made me some great semi's for San Francisco Ocean Beach (my main lineup before moving north) over the decades. Those same boards also worked well at Sunset, my fave wave in HI.
Met his son Clint a decade ago here in Oregon when he showed up with a van full of boards for the Lincoln City (my fave OR local) boyz to demo...just as cool as his pop...Clint was suposed to take over the biz, then recently switched gears and moved to Oregon where he is now a grass farmer...likely took Rusty a while to get over that one.
Thought I could semi-retire from paddling out, so sold our coast home and moved to the mountains, which was a great hang during the covid madness...call of the salt to strong, however, so just put a home in escrow 45 mins from the beach that will be our full time hang. And time to unpack those 9wts for coastal Kings.

Once a surfer...

Cleanline is always my first stop when looking for wet suits and other surfing consumables.

Rusty made my latest, a custom Zeppelin which as the name implies, is a crutch for out of shape old guys carrying a few too many pounds who still want to pretend they can surf a short board. So, perfect fit for me...

Our place on the OP is 20min to LaPush and an hour to the Strait which has been awesome between fishing, especially in cold weather and facilitates weekday pre-work dawn patrols for low crowd/high stoke mornings.

We just booked our annual winter trip to NW Costa last week. Something to look forward to.

Art Coyler another excellent shaper - decade at Rusty's, primarily shaping for the team riders before moving up to Hood River and opening up North Pacific surfboards..

First time this big girl has worn wax in about 10 years. I normally grab shorter and lighter boards but the wife and I will chase some knee high slop tomorrow so what the hell.

9’6” McTavish Original circa 2005. Real deal imported from Aus, no Surftech pop out. Tons of rocker so turns decent and nice in beach break for a 9’6” log. Heavy as all hell compared to my modern boards but catches everything which I need in my current lack of fitness and skill.

Nice!

I’m splitting time between a 6’0 squashtail and a 5’8” fish most of the time. Heading out on a trip bit later this month. Yesterday went out and had some ankle slappers locally.
