The weather has been warming up lately here in the Rockies and I suspected that my days on the local C&R lake will soon be over. I went over early Monday morning to see how things were, cruise around to different spots and check temperatures. Several area surface temperatures were getting up to where I usually don’t fish, but when I went by the inlet area, I heard a wonderful sound, gurgling water. The lake is basically an irrigation reservoir and with runoff high right now, they were diverting very cold river water into the lake. The inlet area is fairly shallow but for those of us that fish this lake a lot, we know there is a nice drop off about 10 yds out. Also, as soon as I got into position, a fair amount of bugs started coming off, with swallows swerving and diving around. I started casting in close, running through the shallows and off into the deeper water. It was like shooting fish in a barrel. I almost felt guilty how easy the fishing was, but remembering how many times this lake had handed my ass to me, the guilt went away quickly. 
In a little over an hour the bugs stopped coming off as quickly as they had started and the fishing slowed considerably. I had managed 11 to the net and a couple of O&O’s. They ranged in size from 15-20 inched and all fought well (the smaller ones would go airborne) and looked healthy, except for one 20” tiger that was skinny and a bit soft. This will be my last trip here until fall as it won’t take long for the new water to warm up, but it was a great way to end the season!
