I think that the theory is that it is inductive current from a “hot” boat. Always seemed like a bullshit to me, designed to sell expensive equipment to people who don’t actually know how to catch fish in the first place.

So inductive current travels down a non conductor?
 
I was an Alaska troller for 26 years. Line voltage is a very real thing. Seawater, an electrolyte, and the dissimilar metals lead and stainless steel create the voltage. Can you catch salmon ignoring this? Of course. Can you make a living ignoring this? Only if you are very lucky. There are ways to vary your voltage without going the blackbox route but that’s more involved than I want to get into here.

No dissimilar metals with braid. Salmon (and albacore) can detect an electrical field and it has been shown that they are more comfortable aligned with a + or - .3 volt neg. field. Get them following your gear and it increases your odds. Still have to have the right trinkets to get them to bite.You can look all this stuff up. There was a Canadian troll guru back in the day who made a living setting up boats but I can’t remember his name. FV Nestor was my boat. It’s now a yacht. Jim
 
My braided downrigger cable is polyethylene spectra. Are you talking about the lead ball and 24" stainless steel release cable?

This is really good to know, I always thought the blackbox was snakeoil TBH but when my braid needs replacement I’ll try switching to wire and a black box
 
Braid is better IMO. I have had wire get rusty and fall apart. It ruins your day. I have never had any real issue with braid.
 
I am squarely in the braid camp. Less blow back and I just find everything about it easier to deal with.

Wire has caught plenty of fish, so not sure Id run out and make the switch unless I needed to respool a rigger, but when it came time I'd highly recommend giving braid a shot.

Also, I personally believe black boxes and electrical current affecting a salmon bite is one of the greatest scams ever pulled off by the fishing industry lol.

Yes, this will happen with the plastic Scotty spools, especially if you fish heavy balls and deep on the wire. They aren't designed with braid in mind.

There's a guy down here in Westport that makes and sells metal spools that are the absolute cats meow. Spendy, but oh so worth it. Why Scotty doesn't make metal spools as a factory option is beyond me.
