Spring turkey

So while it’s pouring down rain this morning, my thoughts have turned to the spring. I’ve hunted grouse for decades, but I think it’s time for something new. Spring turkey. So I’m starting my research now and it looks like the northeast part of the state has the greatest population of turkeys. I have seen them above the ranch up on Mount Hull. Last September while hunting grouse, I saw close to a dozen in two different areas. So I will be doing some early season scouting on Mount Hull to begin with. But I’m going to be doing some paper and digital searching of the north east corner of the state for public land access. Maybe @iveofione can give me some insight to public lands around his place.
In the meantime, I will be working up some shotgun loads using #6 bismuth. Then do a little bit of pattering to see if the choke I have is good enough. I know you can use lead for hunting turkeys, but I have a bunch of bismuth that I want to use up.

Anybody else thinking about spring turkey?

Yes. Have never actually hunted them, however turkey hunting has recently popped up on the radar. I have a few friends that hunt turkeys and they say it’s quite fun.

Calling turkey to a decoy is great fun. I use to hunt the breaks above Lake Roosevelt near Wilbur.

Mount a Jake decoy on a hen like they are humping doggie style. Maybe add another hen decoy watching. The big swinging beards will come a running to line that horny little dude out!

@iveofione, I’m not too sure about shooting turkeys from your front deck. But setting up a temporary blind in the upper meadow wouldn’t be a bad idea. Could I construe this as an invitation? I’ll bring steaks for us…

It's an invitation that is open year round, anytime you want to show up is fine with me. I recently upgraded the guest bedroom with a 12'' mattress and new bamboo sheets so it is not the penalty box it was before. Steaks are always welcome.

Speaking of blinds, my ex felon new neighbor that now shares my road, put a blind up down on the county road not 10' from the actual road and my driveway and on the easement, illegally I might add. He has been killing turkeys right in the middle of the road!

Bring waders and fly rods and a boat if you like although I have plenty. A lake a day as long as you stay.

That is one hell of a tagline!

Turkey hunting is the shit. Please dont use reaper style decoys as you're asking to get shot in the face. Also, it's mega lame.

What he’s doing is so wrong!

My blind will be a couple of stakes and some camo canvas… far from a road.

the more I hunt these birds, the more I am learning how much it pays to Stick and Stay and Make em Pay. I often get bored, and go hiking a hour or so after fly down. More often I bump birds and generally screw things up. My goal this year on the opener is to challenge myself to stay in my spot as long as possible...

Spring turkey hunting is a ton of fun, you won't regret giving it a try. The first time one gobbles close to you and starts answering your calls as it comes closer will have you hooked.

Plus, if there are open waters around, a morning of turkey hunting and afternoon flyfishing makes a great combo.

Go to chewelah. Stay at the chewelah creek inn. Breakfast and lunch at zips. Dinner and margaritas across the street. Turkeys f'n everywhere, fish the creek in between hunts. I'll be there first weekend of may!
