Spring Creek Central OR

Took a dive down to Bend OR to visit my Dad last week. Hit a spring creek one day to see if I could find some hatchery brats. Beautiful country out there! Never fished here before so I took a long walk to see what's what. Strolled by some anglers working small pods of fish along the way and thought to myself this place looks promising.

about a mile in I found a ridiculously large undisturbed pod pellet heads. Fishing was pretty good here ;)

Beautiful neck of the woods! The pellet heads on the coast are all adipose fin clipped - not so in Central Oregon?

I’ve always wondered this every time I net one of those Fall River fish. I suppose it wouldn’t be too hard to pop the question to an employee while at the hatchery. Though it will be winter before I return to the Fall, far too many people in the summer for my taste.

Why is it that the fall gets so much more busy than say, the Met? Is it because of sun river? Or that maybe it’s easier? They’re both the same distance from bend.
My opinion is that it’s much easier fishing. Sunriver doesn’t help either. The Met is also a slightly father trek especially with all of our construction going on this summer. And since there’s no guiding on the Met…. I think there should be more rivers in the area that are not guided but just my opinion. The Fall just happens to be one of those rivers with 4 fishers to 1 guide everywhere you look.

Ah, I didn’t even think about the guiding aspect

Although I lived in K'Falls for three years, I didn't have a fly rod back then and I'm not at all sure what river it is that @Yardus Maximus is showing in his pictures (don't tell!) but what a wonderful place to explore and fish! My wife and I spent the night in Bend two weeks ago (the lupine and paintbrush were amazing with their color) on our drive to Redondo Beach. It was fun heading out of Bend and down 97 to K'Falls. We hadn't been down that road since 1978.

Thanks for sharing pictures!

The lupine is quite good right now!

Story goes that Fall once held trophy size trout until the hatchery accidently released poison in the river and that pretty much wiped them out. The giant trout were never able to return.

In those days, streamers where the deal but you had to sneak up on the critters due to the extremely clear water.

The huge trout were long gone before I started fishing the river and all I caught was planters. .... this was before it became a popular spot for guides so it was still a lot of fun.... giant trout or not.

Wasn’t there also an issue with a fire and fire retardant poisoning the river or am I confusing it with another river?

Actually, I think they did dump some fire retardant in the river during one of the many fires in the area. That certainly didn't do the fish any good.

There's been many, many wild fires close to The Met but fortunately, they've avoid dumping retardant in the water. We were at the river once when the bombers were dropping the red powder on a nearby fire.... it was about then that we decided the fire was getting a little too close and the fishing sucked anyway so we made our escape.

Guides on Fall River?!? Damn, times have changed since I lived in central Oregon.

Guides on Fall River?!?
That's what I was thinking.... 😆

Regardless, really nice report. It's always pretty easy to avoid crowds there as crowded as it is. I always hated the skeeters.

This is what little I know about the Fall river fire retardant poisoning.
The fire was approaching the homes along the lower part of Fall river.
The bombers laid the retardant right along most of the river, killing about 90% of the trout.
I lived in Bend, Or in 1977 thu 1979 and fished Fall river many times.
Big GB's were very common. I never landed one over 3 lbs.
