Why bother? There is already plenty of watered down basketball in the NBA. Twelve teams-more than a third of the league-finished with sub .500 records and averaged over 30 games behind the division leaders. The 3 point shot has made the game boring to watch with 3 pointers about as easy to make as 20 yard field goals in football. And the corner 3 is just absurd-it is basically just a 2 point shot due to the truncated radius of the 3 point line. Move the 3 point line back another 6 feet and force teams to play real basketball instead of a steady diet of trick shots.
Another thing that is watering down the game is the tendency of underclassmen leaving early for the NBA in search of big bucks before their talent is fully developed. About 1 in 12 or 15 actually becomes a real star and the rest are relegated to journeyman role players until the next round of phenom rookies leaving school early replace them. And just like NFL quarterbacks, there isn't enough good coaches to supply the teams already in existence. The result is too many teams like the Mariners that perpetually underachieve-rabid fans supporting a perennial loser instead of voting with their wallet. In all fairness though, almost every team in every sport tries harder to win than the Mariners.
My suggestion would be to move the Mariners to Utah and call them the Salt Lake City Mormites. Not a bad name when you consider that names like Guardians and Commanders are already taken....It would cut down the travel time needed for teams to reach a remote outpost like Seattle.
