Sonics Are Coming Back!

Still unconfirmed rumors, but looks like once the current NBA TV deal expires in 2024, Seattle and Vegas will be getting expansion teams.

The NBA took a massive hit during COVID, and the price tag on an expansion team is rumored to be $2.5 billion. That cash gets distributed across the existing owners, so it is tough to see a scenario where they turn down $5 billion in cash. The league is healthy enough where expansion makes sense, each league is desperate to get a team in Vegas. It all makes too much sense.

Never something for nothing, even with the huge expansion fees. Expect the announcement of approval of the expansion teams to appear just before the opening of the bidding on the new TV deal. The Seattle/Tacoma TV market is the 14th in the country, just behind Phoenix and Detroit, and ahead of Miami and Denver (and Seattle is the largest TV market in the U.S. without a franchise). The Las Vegas TV market is 40th, just behind Austin and Cincinnati, and ahead of OKC. Potential eyeballs equals rating points and advertising revenue.

John Canzano was on KJR talking about the Trailblazers, which will likely be sold soon. He mentioned the league wouldn’t want them to move to Seattle if they are sold as the league wants an expansion team in Seattle.
He also mentioned the Hawks will likely be sold due to the terms of Paul Allen’s trust.

So would the new sonics get to hang the 1979 championship or the three Western Conference finals champ banners? Or are they stuck in Oklahoma City?

I’m not sure how that works. I don’t think the Baltimore Ravens got the Baltimore Colts records…..they moved on with Indianapolis. An interesting question, especially if the NBA allows them to retain the name of the ‘Sonics or SuperSonics’.

"Bennett said he and Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels signed a binding agreement Wednesday, which would be formalized later, that keeps the SuperSonics' name, logo and colors available if Seattle gets a replacement franchise. Bennett said his franchise would create duplicate championship banners and trophies, leaving one set in Seattle and using the second set for undetermined purposes in Oklahoma City."
So, it would appear that the Sonics prior records would be available to application to a new franchise.

Im not a big drinker but if this happens i plan on being shit faced at a game

Can you imagine if the new owners are stupid enough to NOT name the team the Sonics/SuperSonics?

FWIW, I vote for the old school SuperSonics.

I won't believe until I see them actually play Thier first game, especially after all these years they have teased us. Remember we almost got the Sacramento Kings?

I do think there is plenty of talent in the NBA to expand. Having 32 teams seems like a perfect number considering the playoffs and draft.

…As a result, the SuperSonics are headed to Oklahoma City with Bennett leading the way, leaving behind the team name, colors and 41 years of history…..

🤔

Bennett said a lot of things. Guess we will find out

There are already 4-5 unwatchable teams in the NBA, just move one of them to Seattle.....like OKC.... LoL

Well as old as I am, I probably won't be here to cheer them on.

It's like the Seahawk or Cubs fans yelling "Playoffs" after 2 wins in a row.... Believe it when and if I see it

If Seattle crawls back in bed with the NBA then they deserve whatever happens to em.

The city didn’t sink any money into the new arena and won’t be buying the team.
I’m sure OVG would love to have another 40+ dates to fill up and help pay for their billion dollar investment.
The city would of course like the team back because that is another 40 days that they can get tax revenue from a potential 17K plus fans that spend dollars on game day.
