Some new shorts I'm stoked on

I think you're right. For you. Now having said that I don't think anyone who preaches to anyone else about such personal choices is thinking right. These are personal choices, do what you want, and live and let live. People do not have to live up to your vision of what good is. They should instead seek happiness in their own way. Perhaps we would all be happier if the judgement stopped. If it's not interfering with my life, why should I cast my expectations on the choices of others?
You and your girl sound like you have things worked out and I'm happy for you. Don't think for a minute that you know what works for anyone else though. Best you can do is guess.
I'm glad you like these shorts. I have found some I like too.... Carharrts, with lots of pockets to carry shit in.

Yup.

I'm fat. Not anything special to look at. I don't give two shits about what I wear beyond if it's functional.

I have a wife who loves me. I have an amazing son. I haven't stepped foot into a gym in 20 years, but I've known very few gym rats who can keep up with my lifestyle 7 days a week.

More than one way to skin a cat. To each their own.

Whoa, there is a lot here (much of which I agree) that has little to do with my post. I think you are reading too much into it. I'm not telling you how to live your life. I'm suggesting that people who put in the effort of trying to look good might lead to a healthier and happier life. Didn't realize that was so offensive.

And I have to point out that in your first response you said to stay away from girls who care about how I dress. You basically did exactly what you are telling me not to do.

Finally, the Carhart thing. What do you put in all of those pockets? I carry a slim wallet, keys, and a phone. What else do you really need?

5 pages on this.

They really are awesome shorts.

I fish in shorts, any one catch a fish in shorts lately? I did yesterday.

It rained here off and on. After working out (chest day) I literally spent all day on the tying bench filling up nymph boxes while binge watching 1883. Caddis larva, pupa, and midges. I wore a sand color stretch chino that is super comfortable with a cotton henley.

Today is much of the same, but cooler and with heavier rain. I will be back on the bench working on stone flies. Probably start the new Stranger Things.

Enjoy your sun.

I'm not sure that is the benchmark I'd use to gauge health.

I look at this as a marathon. It is not so much about running hard now but can I sustain it for the long haul. The last thing I want to is to be 70 and unable to function because of my health. I see a lot of it in my parent's neighborhood in Arizona. Shit eventually catches up.

I got @Salmo_g, @_WW_ , and @Roper coming over in a few weeks. Three of my elders who are pretty fit and active. When I'm that age I want to be functional and so I'm putting in the effort now.

If we make good decisions when we are younger, even small things, it can really make a difference as we age. Doesn't guarantee anything but I will control what I can control.

I'm not going to ask if you ever quit smoking as you don't need me to tell you. But dude, we all love ya and hope to be busting each other's balls 20 years from now on this same forum.

I think empathy is important. It's pretty easy to realize a lot of people are struggling right now. I had someone tell me recently he had quit at a fast food chain. At first I thought he said he was fired. He said he quit because he found all he ate was the fast food and he was getting sick! He said he was gunna start at the farm outside of town their next cycle. He was excited because the benefits would be better then at the fast food chain. That really struck me and I've thought about it a lot because I can't imagine the farm benefits are that good but he was truely excited.

Seems he is making good choices. Who cares what he wears? I admire people who are grinding away in this life and trying to be good people. Paycheck to paycheck is a truly hard way to live. What they wear I could care less about.

I'm going to tread lightly on the aspect of what women wear because I'm not one...but man a lot of women have food disorders and depression trying to fit an imagine of what they think they should look like...and that's not healthy. I could go on but I think you get my point. Count your blessings and have empathy for those not as well off.

Of course. Does that really need to be said?

I will say there are limits to my empathy. If you have made bad choices and now suffering the consequences, I usually very little empathy. The other thing about empathy is it needs to go both ways. A lot of folks only apply empathy to people that share their views/opinions.

And you don't have to care about how anyone dresses. To simplify my comment down to that suggests you missed my point.

But I will ask you this...why do people dress up for church, funerals, weddings, court, job interviews, etc...?

This started out about shorts that got you stoked and how "manufacturers are making clothes bigger to make you feel better about your fatness" (a shot at folks who may have weight issues). I can think of few things that are less important. Now you're trying to make it into some sort of a social statement so others will agree with you. All I can see is that this is an incredibly shallow topic.

You commented on another thread how "Having fun is difficult" for me, as if you actually knew me. Spending time with my family (#2 son is in town with his partner), hiking/fishing with the pups, building a new cane rod, working in the yard/garden, these are the things that give me joy. Shorts, the latest Tom Cruise movie, I could care less about.

Glad a pair of overpriced $80 shorts seems to give such enjoyment - keep on man, you're doin' great.

Cheers

Well it does need to be said because you made this generalized statement:
"The average American looks like shit. That's not confidence. It shows they've pretty much given up.

More people should care. Bet we'd be healthier and probably even a little happier."

My counter is that empathy might lead to more understanding and less judgment why people are struggling and not all rocking 80 dollar shorts...

As to your question people try to dress up for those events because it is a cultural norm. Let's say you are getting married Swimmy and one of your best friends showed up looking a little rough after a challenging divorce. My guess is you would have empathy for this friend and not assume the things in the statement above. The difference being you know that friend and know he is going through a troubled time.

I'm just saying look around. Many are going through troubled times.

The average American does look like shit. More than two thirds of Americans are overweight or obese and for the first time in my life (I think) our life expectancy is going down. Thems the facts. So are two thirds of Americans simply falling on hard times?

My point is simple. Exercise and taking care of yourself might lead to a healthier and happier life. Do we really disagree?.

As far as the $80 shorts thing, it is similar to a couple of friends I have that bitch about the price of skiing. They whine about it yet they buy weed and several nights a week are downtown at the bar running up tabs. I've suggested maybe cutting out that and then skiing might be affordable. No way jose...I'm an asshole for even suggesting that.

Good points billy.

I just can't agree with people that think its okay to wear whatever they want wherever they go.

It seems many on this site are okay if we have people walking the streets or doing their daily business in nothing but an adult diaper?

I am not a fan of the guy with the " go fuck yourself" shirt walking around the kids playground at the local park.

Strange times.

Swimmy you didn't just state the benefits of exercise and taking care of yourself leading to a richer life which we obviously would agree on.

You tied it all into an image class argument based on the ability of one to have expensive clothing. This is what I disagree with.

Wrong!

I said $80 for these shorts is a bargain....when you see how awesome they are.

My favorite shorts are cut off military fatigues from the surplus store, below the knee so cargo pockets are intact. Baggy and long. I like to represent the 90's even though I'm pushing 40. Cargo pockets, I gotta carry a few prescriptions with me, along with ample space for sunglasses, keys, wallet, knife, phone, pen, sharpie, .38 special...

I gotta laugh, I don’t even own a pair of shorts. My workout is our puppy who’s gonna be a year old June 9th. A couple of miles every day that it’s not pissing down rain, like today. I could stand to loose ten pounds but my evening ale and whiskey won’t let me.

Empathy, apathy, sympathy, it all depends, doesn’t it?
