So many bites

Golf is like chess.

Fishing is like checkers.

If you suck or are somewhat decent at fishing...... just stick with fishing.
You won't have the mental game to be any good at golf.
Ah yes, for man fooled by a fish can claim to be fooled by a hardly intelligent fish. Whereas the man fooled by a ball and hole.....

Sometimes getting bites isn’t enough. Fish don’t have hands and do a lot of things with their mouths besides eat. I have had plenty of times where they were biting but couldn’t get a hook in them and then same setup next weekend landed everything. Sometimes we get a lot of “bites” but no “eats”.
You were the first person ever to explain this idea to me. I think it has a lot of merit. It's a really good reason why people get their pocket picked. A small change or a large change may pique the fishes interest.

I also think that there are some anglers who are better at turning the curious bites into hook ups and that accouts for their greater success.

Since you are getting bites you must be doing something right so I suspect something is mechanically wrong. Perhaps there is too much stretch in the line/tippet. Perhaps the hook to tippet knot is wrong, try another. Maybe the flies are too big, natural food seems to get smaller as summer progresses. Are your hooks sticky sharp? Hone your hooks with a fine diamond and not a crude file, they will be sharper and stay sharp longer. That's all I got.....

No clue if this will help, but I'm a firm believer in standard hooks. I think it's harder for them to do weird stuff. And as @HauntedByWaters mentioned, they can do weird stuff. I've seen cutthroat hit a swung fly with their tail multiple times and somehow not get foul hooked.

Really sharp and barbless helps too. It should easily grab and stick in your hard dry thumbnail.

Good luck!

I do take comfort in the mathematical explanation for my fumblings around landing a steelhead on a fly. The steelhead is the fish of a thousand casts so FishPerCast = .001. Factor out dirtbag side-drifting, plugging, spoons and bait fishing, and your talking more like the fish of 5000 casts; FPC = .0002, Now factor in the fact that I haunt a 'fly fishing only' area almost that disallows weighted flies, multiple flies, barbed hooks and bobbers. Things are more like 1 in 10000 so FPC = .0001. I might get that made up into a cool logo and put it on my fishing hat.
Spinning rod, torpedo bubble, and fly should increase your odds. The fish are always on the other side, under a tree branch, hangin around a boulder…😉
