A brief report from my family’s spring break in Siesta Key Florida. I packed along an 8wt with some flies, floating line with a plan to hit the beach in front of our place every morning before the family wakes.
This is what I had in mind, calm clear shoreline to sight and catch snook like this gentleman here on our last day.
That didn’t happen however, a front had just came in and it was blowing in the 20s the first 3 days here, beach was all churned up and murky. I did try it a bit in front of our place before getting in the rental to explore the inside bays and passes.
While checking out new spots I ran into a local retiree who gave me some spots to try, he just got started in fly fishing. This is one of the greatest rewards from exploring, you never know who you’ll encounter and the intel you gain that can make or break your trip. I ended up fishing the inlets, bays and passes since the beach was not fishable until the last day when we had to checkout in the morning.
Some fish caught, speckled trout, snook and a flounder. Not red hot fishing but the checklist is complete
Also worth mentioning, Sarasota and Siesta Key area has a lot of good food with that local flair.
