An acquaintance of mine will be camping at Potholes from June 29 to August 6 with three grandkids aged 9, 7, & 5. He has asked me where he might be able to take the kids for their first fishing experience that's close to Potholes. He hopes to have the kids have a chance to catch bluegills, crappie, maybe even a juvie bass from shore.

Do any of you have any suggestions.? I just don't know that area very well. Thanks in advance for any ideas>

Ron,
Kind of depends on water levels but I’ve seen people fish off the shore at the state park, the pull outs along the face of the dam and also on both sides of Lind Coulee.
There are other areas as well. It might be worth them stopping in a MarDon to buy some gear or bait and get some suggestions from them as they are really tuned into to the fishing on Potholes.

How close? It's a 15 min drive into the CNWR to Shiner-Hutchinson lakes. There's a tiny dock (in slightly questionable shape) next to the launch and some shore access. The lake is stuffed with panfish, and they hang around the dock pretty consistently. They were eating anything small and black the other day. Bass in there, also!

I believe you can get a dock pass at MarDon for a few bucks, also. At least you used to be able to!

The pull outs along the dam face can be excellent, little to no mud or ticks. You will have to be careful with traffic but once you are down to water you are well away from road.
THANKS!!

I know there are power boat races near Mardon, a friend and her hubby go camping there. Her bro owns a racing boat. Not as big as Miss Budweiser. I can ask her when it is and post here.

Just heard from her, the boat races are the weekend after Labor Day.
