I'm planning a trip to La Ventana in the next few weeks. Should I bring a fishing rod? Does anyone fish from shore? (I'm not too keen on charter trips.)
Never been there, but at the very least, take a spinning rod....even if you can only get out for a few hours each morning. I had a blast with mine last year in Loreto on the mornings we didn't go out...and almost every evening. I wish I would have brought it with me the year prior!
I’d consider a guide, but make sure it’s actually a fly guide and not just a boat driver. From shore, if you’re just being casual, I’d bring an 8 wt and throw small clousers towards structure.
At least in the summer, there are little roosters along the shore in a couple of spots. Seems like they'd probably be there now also.
If you want to get a panga and fly guide, dm me. I'm not sure what is going on now, but if your time extends into March, I've been told there are some interesting fly opportunities in that month.
There are definitely fish available from shore. Wheels will help, and go early to avoid the wind. 8wt would be fine for the size class I encountered in November. Use a floating line or intermediate with a stripping basket. Olive or tan baitfish/Clouser patterns were my best producers.
