Setting up a fish finder when not on the water

I got a Lowrance unit. I would like to get somewhat familiar with it before going out on the boat. I have read that operating a transducer out the water will harm the transducer over time.
I have 2 options, suspending the transducer in a 5 gallon bucket or a 55 gallon drum. Would one of them work?

I realize there is a lot of operations that I can't do in that small of container but according to the manual there is a lot to learn on the unit.

I think you can turn off the transducer in the settings or just unplug it.

You can also put most units into demo mode so you can practice with other settings. I think demo mode also turns off the transducer.
