Serial poacher sentenced

It costs zero to suspend this guy's right to own firearms for 5 years. You forfeit those rights for far less heinous crimes not involving their use. Hell I have buddies that were hit with that for growing weed and not even selling it before things were more legal. Either way we can be certain it cost way more to investigate than it is worth on paper. I'm glad they got him but I think more hours, more money, some time incarcerated, and a forfeit of gun ownership for a few years is more fitting. He's demonstrated a long record he can't be trusted with such implements.
Yup. Thus my "at minimum." No way the $5k came even close to covering their costs.

I think the prosecuting costs belong to society because it is society that made the laws governing an activity/crime that has no moral bearing. Laws concerning when and where and how to harvest wild game are to a large part arbitrary. Often the only difference between a poacher and a legit hunter is 24 hours.

Now I don't in any way mean to condone poaching, and I am thinking in more general terms than this case more or less just thinking out loud.

But if I get a speeding ticket, I do not want to pay all the associated costs.
Troopers salary for 20 minutes
Gas in the troopers car as it sits idling behind me. Wear and tear on the car... technically if a judge really hated someone or what they did he could really go to town on what to charge as costs. Paint on the bars of the jail cell? Oil for the door hinges?
The electricity in the fluorescent bulbs in the cell? The list is just about endless.

Better off just to have fines commencerate to the crime
