Seeking Real Opinions on Elk Rifles

OP, hope you enjoy the new rifle.

Given your height, a slip on limbsaver for your old 30-06 would probably make it fit better which will reduce felt recoil in and of itself.

I would throw a 2-7 or 2-8x on it and keep it as a nostalgic complement to your new rifle.

Another vote for the 6.5 PRC shooting 156 Berger hand loads. Has just a tad more recoil than a 6.5 creedmor

Got my 6.5 Creedmoor's new scope all dialed in last week. But I drew a doe tag for a particular unit here in Oregon, and the spot I'm dialed in on to get my doe is a spot I can't shoot a rifle. It's shotgun or bow only (due to proximity to civilization). But I went out and dialed in the scope anyways for funsies, and because I may have a good opportunity for elk in November if all falls into place.

Shots 16-20 to finish my session at 200yd. That's 5 shots. The bottom hole is a bit bigger than the other 3 ;) - Not the tightest group otherwise, but I'll take it (1" squares).

That's a decent group. I measure <2" with my calipers held just off the screen (not going to scratch it!) A 2" group @ 200 yards = 1" @ 100 yards = 1 minute of angle. So you're <1 MOA which is pretty darn good.

You might do better than that but you might not. Regardless, you want to make sure to use the ammo you will be hunting with to see how your rifle performs with it.

Yeah I'll run hunting ammo through it next time. Especially if I end up elk hunting in November.

The limited amount of practice I’ve done with it makes it seem pretty awesome, but for whatever reason I don’t really enjoy using a scope compared to the iron sights.

Also, will be selling it after this season as bringing it to the EU is a headache I don’t need.

Remember I said take a good look at the Sauer XT100 Classic? When I got mine, in 6.5 Creedmoor, it shot 1/4" groups at 100 yards straight out of the box, with no tweaking or adjustments. That was with Hornady Whitetail ammo

Evan: more rounds. At 200 that’s really ….marginal for hunting at that range in my opinion. The cure is more rounds with the ammo and scope you will use. That should tighten up nicely.

And yes I’m prepared to be flamed for this opinion. I truly believe that rifle and ammo is very capable of more, and for elk with those ballistics at that range you better damn sure know where the bullet is going.

Nice, Bob!
