Seaside Oregon Salt - Early May?

Longs for Cutts

Freshly Spawned
Heading to Seaside, OR for a wedding on May 10. Any saltwater opportunities within roughly a half-hour? I will probably be able to get away for a couple mornings. Surf perch? Jetties? Advice? I never fished salt even when I lived in Bellingham, WA.

I should have appropriate tackle and can tie any necessary flies.

Surf perch are around in the surf (duh!), and also around rocks. Lings and bass might be around the rocks further south, but be aware fishing rocks can be real dangerous. Also there are some marine protection/sanctuary areas around, so make sure to check OR regs on where they are. SRC season is the same as trout season, so it would be closed.

If you are fly fishing, I'd just fish the surf around seaside for perch and other weird fish.

The south end point at Seaside features a shallow reef starting about halfway out the cobblestone point, so likely as good a place as any to fling a few. Plenty of parking at the beach.

I don't think it's required, but it's a great idea to wear one anyway. I wear an inflatable when I'm after surf perch.

As above, surf perch is what I'd be after if the surf isn't too gnarly.

I asked because about 10 years ago I was bank fishing with friends there and a sheriff 's deputy gave us a warning. Didn't save the rule book from back then so can't prove he was right or not.

Thanks for the responses.

Should I be looking at a 6wt or an 8wt rod? I've been trying to find an excuse for a new "salty 6" for throwing streamers here in Montana. I have salt-friendly reels already.

Shooting head preferred?

Pattern suggestions are welcome. I can tie them, I just don't know what "them" are...

6-8. Personally, I prefer a 7 for them as I can beat the wind with it and still feel the smaller fish somewhat. For my 7wt, any sinking shooting head in the 240-250gr range. I've come to like the SA Sonar Titan 3D line that ends in a sink4 (I'm not sure if they still make it, but sink5 would work great too). If the surf is really gnarly, then the fastest sinking shooting head you've got will be better. Pattern-wise, I just tie checkerboards and either use orange or red. If I'm with a buddy, we start with the opposite color.

basically this (not my photo):

I just use enough weight to keep it riding hook up.

Been a while since I've gone after them, but they're not all that smart....they've gotta grab whatever looks like food pretty quick in that dynamic environment, so no sense in getting super fancy with fly patterns.
