Seals on the Skagit

Seals I can live with. It’s those fuck-off giant sea lions I can do without. Seen them up the Sandy. I was wading some flats on the Columbia last summer about 10 feet from the drop off when this sea lion pops up, roars at me, and gives me the eye. Those things are really big up close.
Damn, above Rockport? Well, the good news is it might mean there's a push of steelhead. Did you know...Lewis & Clark named the Washougal the Seal River since it was full of them when they came upon it. If the fish runs are good, it's natural to have seals up the river. Now, I'm sure it could also mean that the sound doesn't have enough food. All my years fishing the Sky in the 90s I never saw a seal in the river.
Definitely saw them in the lower Skagit. I was on the delta duck hunting one time and had to make sure I didn't drop a duck in the river. There were seals and sea lions both hunting chum. The mutt was a bit nervous retrieving! They were checking him out pretty hard.

Had a very similar experience the last time I dipped smelt in the Cowlitz (roughly a million or so years ago). A big bull seal lion popped up right where I was running the net. Nothing cute about those things. Looked like a 1000 pound Rottweiler with flippers. Waaay too close for comfort! I've also heard of them in the Washougal above the bridge at the mercantile.

A Stellar sea lion is a big mo-fo up close and personal. Ran into some eating our salmon up in Alaska

They really are. When I was working in Boise for 3 years my work was right under the take off and landing path at the air port and i guess there is an A10 squadron that trains there. Really beautiful sounding aircraft. I am looking at the radio controlled version of it right now as long as I still have good eyes.
