I got the opportunity to fish a new (to me) lake with @Billy recently. We picked the best weather day in a string of marginal forecasts and had high hopes for active fish and maybe a chironomid hatch. It’s good to have hope

It was a chilly start with both air and water temperature 40F. Add 10mph of W and that’s early March all right. I was bundled and ready to figure these fish out. An hour later I got my first good grab and landed a 15” chunky rainbow.

The next cast I missed a fish. Then it got quiet. Crossed paths with Billy who also had one to the net and a few other tugs. Well, it was still early. We moved into a promising bay and worked it. Billy found a fish or two in a deep slot and I fished the edges with a bright orange balanced leech. Had a couple take downs but nothing to the net.
My Supercat in its preferred habitat.

Shore break for a sandwich and regaining feeling in my feet felt good. The landscape is a treat.

My nav skills kicking into the wind are suspect. I high centered in the only shallow spot in the vicinity.

Still looking for my second fish. And I found it dredging a 18’ deep flat.

Now it was past noon. Still no bugs showing. I had visited most of the promising areas and found some excellent structure but the fish were playing hard to get. It was a grind it out type of day, and grind we did. I picked up a couple more and missed a couple. I think Billy did a little better. But I got my exercise and explored a new lake.
