Non-Fly San Diego

Life of the Party
Hey guys!

I'm going solo to San Diego for a conference in July. Anybody got any thoughts for wrangling with either yellow tail or mahi-mahi on a fly?

I'm also open to conventional and was looking at one of the giant boats. Does anybody have any experience with that?

I've been doing a little research on this very topic! Might be heading down at some point tagging along on my wife's work trip(s).

Not pelagics but there's lots of beach access for what looks like interesting surf fishing - corbina, surf perch, croaker. Check out Mission Bay Fly Fishing Company for DIY info and guided walk and wade trips.

Conway Bowman is the famous offshore captain targeting Mako sharks on fly down there. Looks insane!

Those rental skiffs are basically bathtubs with motors. They can be kind of fun for targeting bay bass and stuff though.

July is typically prime time for makos. Maybe a little early for yellowtail, tuna and dorado, but that can fluctuate.

This really is interesting. Basically like fishing in the bays for salmon. I always wanted to try that light tackle halibut they do down there.
