For anyone who wants more info on this, here's a better and more evenhanded article than KIRO's typical clickbait:

As always, please keep your comments civil and not attacking folks who think differently than you. We don't need that crap here. Take it to Twitter.

Josh again please shut it down and delete it if starts to slide on the ice... I was just really surprised by the article. And know of several people that were looking for full sized in this coming year.

Expect a lot more changes in in the auto/truck/RV/camping vehicle world in the months to come. Some manufacturers have priced themselves nearly out of existence and now have labor and material costs so high that making a profit is virtually impossible. Two of the worlds largest vehicle companies are now flirting with bankruptcy-Volkswagen and Stellantis and the failure of a single poorly received new product will seriously weaken some of the others. In case you wonder why all CUV's, SUV's, pickup trucks and camper vans all look alike is because no one can risk taking a chance on something new and different. Innovation-once the glue that held the auto industry together-is basically dead having been replaced by more and more bullshit electronic gizmos, most of which have a limited life span before being superseded by another short lived gizmo.

The reality that electric vehicles just aren't viable in some areas and climates is starting to sink in. EV's don't resell very well and many companies have begun to scale back their once ambitious plans to electrify. I view the current vehicle market a lot like the NIL and Transfer Portal stuff in college football. A lot of things are going to change but we don't yet know the scope of the changes, it will be interesting to watch it unfold. There will be some big winners and some big losers.

These giant RV's are like $500-$ a mill. Why don't the manufacturers throw in the EV dinghy towed prius sized runabout. 85% are already towing a jeep or toyota to run about town once the RV is parked. This could meet the EV mandate they have to sell in Cali etc..

Most of the motorhomes and 5th wheel trailers (as well as powerboats for that matter) in my neighborhood never move from where they're parked anyway...including quite a few big luxury models that reside in their own custom buildings. Like lake cabins, they're apparently acquired during some feverdream fantasy that seldom works out in reality. Things that are complicated to use just become backyard or storage facility relics.

Hilarious to watch some retired dope drive his huge dually diesel truck on its daily quarter-mile trip to the grocery store or McDonald's.

For $.5M to $1.5M…think of how many really really lavish vacations you could take with the Mrs…without the headaches of maintaining and moving around a long land yacht?

It’s not just motor homes and such.
Article said vehicles 8,500 gross and larger.
My F350 is listed at 12,000. Empty it weighs 7,400+
An F250 will gross over that. Sure, you could register it for 8,000 gvw, but that carries risks.

This is from the Autopian article I posted above:

SFGate says that the bulk of the RVs that would get caught up in this are primarily large Class A motorhomes and Super C motorhomes, the kinds of motorhomes rolling on specialized chassis. Technically, that 8,500-pound threshold would endanger far more RVs than just the biggest ones. Many Mercedes-Benz Sprinter camper vans have gross weight limits above 8,501 pounds. However, Mercedes-Benz should also sell enough EVs to offset selling vans, something the big RV chassis manufacturers currently cannot do.

Diesel F250/350/etc trucks would fall into the same bucket as the Sprinter campers, they aren't at risk because companies like Ford likely meet the EV sales mandate with their other products. Gas pickup trucks of any size aren't affected as this is a diesel only regulation. Large diesel RVs are at risk because none of those companies are making any EVs of any sort.

Not getting into the discussion as to if this regulation is smart or dumb, just adding in some clarification.

And thank you for the clarification.
Not much we can do until seeing the exact wording from the state
