I once found a skull while scrambling through thick creekside brush. What caught my eye was a bit of stark white amid the dead leaves and dark forest debris.
When I poked at it with my boot I managed to see two empty eye sockets. Just about shit my pants when I fully realized what I was looking at.
Fortunately I was within cellphone range, and managed to contact 911, who put me in contact with the county sheriff's office, who asked my location, said they'd be there within two hours with a forensics team, and that I needed to 'sit-tight' and not touch anything.
So I waited. It was late in the day already, and the forest quickly grew dark and somber.
I stared at the remains, and grew impatient when the two hours passed, and I still heard no vehicles or sounds to indicate the authorities were on their way. My cellphone battery had long since died, but I still had my headlamp and several battery changes.
Finally, I could no longer resist scraping at the skull with a stick...and eventually figured that nobody would be able to tell that I had cleared the moss covered skull of its forest duff.
I stared at the now fully exposed skull and wondered how this individual had come to this sad state...and why did he have deer horns growing out of his head?
