Roseburg Intel Needed

Hey y'all. I'll be down in Roseburg the second week of August for work, and I'll have the afternoons available to get out and fish. It would be awesome if someone could point me in the right direction here. Smallmouth in town? North Umpqua steelhead? Any trout around within an hour or so? I've been doing some research online and checking out the area on OnX, but anything more specific would be helpful. Hit me up in the DMs if you have anything you'd like to share. I'm not looking for the rock to stand on (maybe I am on the North Upqua?), but a road, stream, park, or pullout would be awesome. My lips are sealed if you send anything my way. You guys are the best. As always, I appreciate your help.

I believe this reading is taken in the Winchester area by I-5, after the dam.

Having spent my summers in the area growing up, there was talk that the NU was too cold for the SMBs to go up it; and certainly not go thru the fish ladder. Well, as you can see, that is not the case anymore. With all the housing growth upriver, people have put straws into the ground and river itself, coupled with no vegetation stream-side from the fires, the water temps have been getting higher and higher, and water levels lower and lower.

I once wet waded in June. Spoke with a guy, said the river was a bit high for that time of year. I looked at him and asked how long he lived in the area? His answer spoke volumes as he was also a California transplant. (FYI…The water was at a normal August level and temp that day.) No sense bursting his understanding and lack of knowledge; so I kept my intel to myself and bid him a great day.

There are many pull outs past Glide. Fish early in the day; know the Regs; and have fun exploring. If you’re not a Spey fisher or can roll cast well, try a spinning set up with 8lb line, bigger sized torpedo bubble, 6 to 8lb leader material (almost the length of your rod), and an unweighted fly of your choice. Rocks are slick so respect the river and your skill level when wading.

FYI… there’s still not much shade up there and the scarred trees are kind of a bummer to see.
