Rod Carriers

Cliff

Has anyone ever used these rod carriers before, or ones like them? I'm curious as to how well they work. I am purchasing a new camper for my truck and wanted to put some type of a rod rack on top, rather than disassemble/reassemble my fly rod every time I stop to fish while drive-by angling.

I personally do not have that rod carrier but I guide I fish with often does and he really like the carrier

I have a Titan Rod Vault 3 rod carrier that I purchased in 2013. It is invaluable when fishing a road river system as you mentioned. Titan Rod Vault was bought by Denver Outfitters and then I believe by Thule. The 3 rod carrier was the only configuration offered back in 2013, but now they have 1, 2, 3 and 4 rod carriers available.

I've used a 4 flyrod vault (Denver design) for several years. Really like the time it saves getting on water.

1) You need to have the flyrod protected by some sort of soft fabric sleeve (somewhat of a flyrod condom) because vibration inside the tube can abrade guide wraps (even though the aluminum tube are plastic lined).

2) I would not trust the relatively flimsy flyrod 'access door' lock to dependably hold the door shut, so wrapping a bungee to further secure the door will prevent any possibility of seeing your ejected flyrods bouncing down the road behind your vehicle.

3) Leaving your flyrods inside the vault sitting in the hot sun for extended periods can't be good for them.

4) When you're out fishing with your flyrods, and the vault is empty, it would be best to leave the vault door unlocked so some scumbag doesn't break it open to steal your gear and damage the unit.

Thanks for the tips, Krusty, very helpful.

5) Check your reel seat every time you pull a rod out to fish after driving some distance. Bouncing / road vibrations can cause the rings to come loose occasionally. I lost a decent steelhead last year when I went to put the fish on the reel and it started flopping around. Luckily, the reel didn't fall completely off but I lost the fish while trying to get it tightened back up. My 'vault' was homemade with ABS pipe and an ammo box though so a legitimate manufactured one might not have that happen as easily.

From what I’ve seen of the TRXTLE it’s very expensive for what it is. The components are pretty cheap and not what I would consider to be worth using.

I gave their original and updated version a close look when I was in the market for a rod vault because they were significantly cheaper than other brands.

I’ve got a river quiver and it seems much more durable than the Trxsle ones I see around. Pretty happy with it, rod scratching hasn’t been an issue but I did start to notice some on my reels so I installed some padding on the inside of the access part which seems to work.

Good point!

I also place the flyrod butt/attached flyreel inside a Crown Royal bag to reduce road dust intrusion, as well as wear on the reel anodized surface from vibration.

My flyrods remain fully assembled at home....ready to be inserted into the vault in minutes. Saves shitloads of time, especially when you fish multiple rods from watercraft.
