Record one day count for winter steelhead on the North Umpqua

There's a video weir at the fish ladder located at the evil Winchester Dam on the North Umpqua. On February 8th, 924 fish passed through which is an all time record daily count for the facility. The current return is over 3500 fish (almost entirely wild). Here's a link to the live stream: Live Fish Cam

There's quite a fishery below the dam. I had a buddy go last week and the boat hooked 12 (gear fishing - I think they use beads).

That's positive for a change. There seems to be an uptick in returns up and down the coast. Can't help but think the Skagit and Sauk are getting a good return as well. To bad we'll never know due to the department of f... ups running the show.

We'll know about the Skagit after June and after the escapement calculation has been made. As for up and down the coast, I'm not as sure. Steelhead from the Umpqua south through CA have a different ocean migration pattern than those from northern OR coast up through WA and BC, with very different marine survival rates.
 
Some good news for once for winter steelhead. Checked and compared WDFW Hatchery Escapement Reports. To date, numbers seem to be up this year compared to the 10 yr average. Some had double the average. The Bogachiel topped out the highest return so far at 3282 and the Elochoman 2nd with 2504. Injury recovery kept me on the sidelines, and never made it to either of those but talked to a few guys that did. With the high waters, it was tough, with small windows of opportunity. Many fish blasted up with anglers missing them. But when fishable, catching was good. Hope it's a trend that continues.

I’m really enjoying this fish cam, so many fish passing through. I’ve seen up to 7 fish in the box at one time. Positive feelings.
 
There are some seriously chunky fish swimming through that!

Pretty awesome to see.
