@Billy already answered your question about hovering above them (Cool! I don't see what you see Billy but I know it works for you!).

This is what I look for when attempting deep vert. The red is the fish and the behavior is such I think I can catch it.


The Garmin is so powerful that you can actually see two lines representing size 12 chironomids assuming you have two out but most of the time I'm using a heavy jig to get down quickly....
