Ranchos Palos Verde

Never been to Ranchos Palos Verde but the wife and I flew down for a long weekend. This place is spectacular and worthy of sharing a few pics.

We're staying at this sick ass resort called Terranea. What a location.

There are 5 or six restaurants on the property. This one called Nelsons has the best views.

There are some 50 miles of trails right around the resort. We've done some casual hiking already but have a big hike planned tomorrow.

The coastline is spectacular.

Today was pretty windy and the waves were crashing in. I could sit for hours and watch this.

There is also a lighthouse nearby which makes for a decent subject. Catalina Island is in the distance. That is probably worth a trip...maybe next time.

I don't drink but maybe I should start.

Tomorrow I'm going to try and shoot some of the wildlife. There are some cool birds around. Also, hoping to get a great sunset or two before we leave and try some of these same shots in the golden hour.

Folks in Socal might be nuts but this place is beautiful.

Our daughter and SIL live in Palos Verdes Estates - just around the corner (no ocean view) from where you are. PVE is comfortable, clean and feels very safe. A good place to raise their two little ones. Have fun.

Swimmy, that is one of my favorite areas having grown up nearby back in the 60's. Those coastal waters used to be teeming with bonito, still my all-time favorite game fish. They don't seem to be around in numbers any more, but those large Calico bass still hang out in those kelp beds off Palos Verde. Thanks for the pics, brings back very fond memories.

Three little birds. Anyone know what these are? I haven't had any luck with the google.

We ran into this guy today. Guess he brings his pet tortoise to the park everyday and walks her.

Those are double-crested cormorants. You can identify them by the orange gular (throat) region. Of the 3 species of cormorants along the west coast (double-crested, Brandt's, and pelagic), double-crested are the only species that you would find inland in freshwater.

Grew up just down the hill from there, in Torrance. It was a great place to grow up, riding my bike to the beach and stuff, but man, just way too many people now.
