Raingear for Alaska

I’m a big fan of the simms guide jacket for a bunch of reasons but one thing in particular is the cuff. The gasket and velcro style allows it to be wrapped tight to wrist (similar to other styles and manuf’s) but the overcuff really helps keep that area dry. Aside from material and quality etc, many jackets seem to have a different cuff and those were always problematic for me in a heavy rain and any long sleeve shirt seemed to wick the water right up your arms, but that guide jacket cuff seemed to work well. Never been to AK but this is my exp with fishing or being out in heavy rains

Here is my son Luke in the Grundens Green Jacket. We brought other jackets, but when it started to rain, this was the best. If it is raining you might as well keep on fishing, the fish are already wet.

You'll have a great time. My buddy Mike guided for IBL for almost a decade, and while this is the first year he won't be there for cohos, it sounds like Todd runs a high quality operation and the coho fishing can be downright silly in September. We're in the middle of another set of atmospheric river events here in SE (up to 7" of rain fcst for this coming fri-sun...don't worry, I'll be dry in my gore-tex :ROFLMAO:), but things *should* be drying out a little for our "little false summer" about the 2nd week in sept.

It's really GREAT to hear this about IBL. Stay dry in your gore-tex ;) and wouldn't it be something if the weather at the lodge is calm, slightly overcast, only a bit of rain for my first ever visit to Alaska? (Wishful thinking).

Rain gear purchased, check.

Looking at the weather forecast for Yakutat; what a change from the Columbia Basin (forecast 98F today). At Yakutat, it looks like the high/low temperatures are seven or eight degrees apart (that's okay): 56/48F with showers. Waders, raingear, nitrile gloves with fingerless wool gloves, poly and wool for layers.

A week from tomorrow: North to Alaska!

Some helpful links, if you would like to watch the weather before your trip...

APRFC QPE/QPF viewer - pretty accurate precipitation forecast. It predicted 3"-4" of rain in Yakutat for yesterday, and the actual was 3.14"

MesoWest - A super-bitchin' online meteorological dashboard with a wide array of available stations and attributes, both near-real time and historic. Time-series searchable as well.

FAA Weathercams - Hundreds of remote camera sites, many with meteorological data as well. The Yakataga cam is slightly closer to Icy Bay than Yakutat, both are good for current seaward conditions, aka where the bulk of the weather comes from.
