Probably wouldn't use the 7wt at PNP if that's the plan though.
Hit the sound today using a mix of gear and fly. Wanted an MA 10 or 11 king and a then planned to target coho on the fly. Took too long tracking down a good king so decided to keep one just shy of 25 and then went hunting for coho. Glad I did, it was the highlight of the day. All in 7-12 on adult fish fly fishing. Really solid fish for this time of year.

I only had a couple hours before family obligations and there was a small craft advisory, but with only 3 days open for king salmon in MA10 (if quota lasts that long), this is no time for caution...
Launched at dark-o-thirty, spent a good amount of time looking for bait once on the fishing grounds, saw a good amount of surface bait with birds on it, was tempted to use my 8wt over them but bait looked "happy", no signs of salmon on it and I was trying to maximize chances to get a chinook so I continued to search for better bait.
Eventually I did and by 7am I had an almost 4 lb coho and a 12 lb king both on a heavy jig, both males on empty stomachs, king was a butterball, only 29 inches long but huge shoulders and girth, fatso!. Should have left then but wanted to catch some herring, boat traffic got progressively really busy after sunrise.
I eventually left for home after several close encounters (I even broke the boat horn switch I installed last year after almost being run over several times while casting or jigging) and after loosing my favorite sabiki to some oblivious fancy boater downrigger lines (they were trolling that close to each other, weaving in an out of the drifting moochers and jiggers, not following depth contours, not looking ahead on the direction of travel, ugly). At least the sabiki died after landing about 3 dozen herring of various sizes, some of them as sextuplets, hopefuly it made a mess of those fancy Scotty downriggers they were sporting. The return against the wind and chop was pretty snotty, was supposed to be 15 knots, gusting to 21 knots, looked more like sustained 20s. Fish tasted great on the cast iron griddle.

This time of year most of my cutthroat seem to bite in a half hour window before dawn, so I did the early shift today.
Saw one good size king jump about 500 feet out. I put a perfect cast out to it but didnβt get a bite, probably because my perfect cast landed 400 feet short.
I was supposed to go with the wife to Pass yesterday evening so she could kayak and I could fish, but she got absorbed in a project and it wasn't the best weather to take out the boat so I threw on waders and headed to the local beach. One of the first double digit fish days in a long time, of course 12 of those were buffalo sculpin. The first one made me happy because it took the skunk off. By the 5th one I was trying to see how many I could hook, felt like the secret was to wait till you felt it chomping on the fly and then slllooooooowwwly strip until it took a big enough bite to get the hook in its mouth. They don't fight like much on a 6wt but (the biggest was 8" and actually put up a little fight) I bet with a 2 or a 3 it could be interesting. Finally at the end of the trip I decided to go back to a spot I'd already hit with a different fly and got rewarded with the baker's dozen and an OK cutt.
Nice cutt.
If you are catching a bunch of sculpin, there is one way to solve that problem if you are looking to do so, strip faster. The sculpin wonβt like it and the cutts wonβt care.

Hopefully both, primarily bait. I love whole grilled sardines, can't remember the last time I grilled herring, about time!

Hit the Sound for a short session this afternoon. Planned to jig a point for Kings but saw no big bait balls on the finder. Instead, noticed a nice juicy rip coming off the point with a few jumping shakers in it. Time to put down the jig rod and pickup the fly rod.
2-5 on adult fish with a few other followers. Nice finding fish off a point I have not fly fished before. Rezzies are here and where they should be early. Hopefully a good sign for when MA 9 beaches open up.
