Puget Sound

Well. I beached the meanest bastard of a wild coho I’ve ever caught. Took me to my backing, got it in closer, backing again, reeled again, and then it made a run that totally hosed my line up on my reel because I didn’t have the drag set. So then I had to hand line it the rest of the way in. No pic because my whole setup was hosed and I was trying to get it back in the water quick.

Was hoping to catch a good rezzie, but I wasn’t expecting that fish. Don’t know what it’s doing in the Sound this early in the summer, besides making poor culinary choices.

No other interesting bites although numerous shakers with bellies bulging with bait. One guy hooked a nice king but was betrayed by a faulty knot.

Also, funny story. Right after I caught that fish, the guy to my right hucking buzz bombs switched over to my left, which if you know this extremely well known beach was right where the tide flows over the point, and proceeded to wade out chest deep.

I told him “hey, you know I hooked that fish right where you’re standing,” and he responded enthusiastically “yeah, this is the best spot on the beach!”

Not what I meant, buddy… I was too jazzed about the fish to be overly bent out of shape, though.

How big do you estimate that fish to be?

MA 9 report from today…..

My voluntary trip report was pretty easy to fill out. No beach chinook were encountered or harm, in fact no fish were. Definitely not a July for the record books in my case. 😂

Sorry to hear of the skunking. My morning started at 0400 hr, I had laid out my fishing gear and got dressed to head out to MA9. I had all my gear in the van but did a check on my waders and boot, that I had in a container in the van but the container extra clothes and towels. No waders or boots. Went back into the house and checked everywhere I thought they could be. I did not fish for salmon at all last year so I was lost at where my gear could be. By now it was getting too late to beat the tides, and I just went back into the house and worried about where it was, since I have had some trouble with things dissipating out of my area. By now my wife is up and wondering why I hadn’t gone fishing, I told her I couldn’t find my waders, she ask me if I had check my van. I held back my anger but just went out to my van and SOB there were my gear in its counter, but not where I normally keep it.

Al,
Bummer you couldn’t get out yesterday. I hope to see you on the beach this summer.

As far as skunkings go, I’ve had more than my share over the years. They are just part of the game we enjoy.

No problem.
All you need is a garden stake, a crab pot bait box and a piece of wire.
You want to do this preferably in sandy areas and with eel grass nearby and good tidal flow. Rocky areas will yield more red rock crabs.
Bait the bait box, wire it to the stake and stick the stake in the bottom. I’ve been using shad but chicken, fish carcasses etc will work.
The tidal flow will send the bait scent downstream. If I’m fishing, I like to fish above the stake so I can see crabs coming on the bottom from below me.
This is the basic set-up. You could also just wire the bait to the stake if you really wanted to go simple.
As mentioned, very hillbilly like. 😂

Once a crab is on the bait box, I move out beyond them on the deep water side. I’ll either force them into shallower water with my feet then net them or just net them right off the bait box. Crabs can move relatively quick which is why I try to block them from a deep water escape.
This is what it looks like when a crab is on the bait box.

This is super simple and I find it incredibly fun to watch how the crabs react once they smell the bait. Some are super cautious and others just race in. You can do this without fishing as well. If I’m not fishing and just crabbing, I set up two stakes to double my chances. I think kids would enjoy doing this as well.
I hope this helps.

This is awesome, and I will be giving this a go at the earliest opportunity. Sure appreciate it.

My buddy claimed to have caught a few off Posession last opener in the 6-7lb range. I thought he was BSing but I wonder if they are in early

To think I drove through Gorst (what a name!) daily for seven years and never once scoped it out. My bad! Missed those 20 pounders.

But my first fly rod saltwater fish came from Sinclair Inlet: a flounder
I drove by Gorst with a buddy yesterday. Saw two set nets from shore out about 100 yards. They were by the railroad tracks heading to the shipyard. In between them I could see some movement on the surface from what I assumed was a pod of fish...and then a decent size fish rolled...which I assumed was a chinook.

Got first keeper of the year in area 10 this morning! Lots of shakers, one other big bite. Lots of 2” baitfish around so I adjusted my fly accordingly and landed the keeper. Great fight lots of acrobatics but he stayed pinned. Perfect conditions: strong tide, overcast, and just a little bit of wind.

Fished gear in 10 looking for Kings today. Only caught rockfish, dogfish, two small coho ~2lbs and some shakers.

Kings are closed in 9 and 10 so time for the gear rods to go away. Looking forward to a pre-work 9 beach session with the fly rod come Friday.
I wouldn't put them in the back of the closet. 10 was only at 30% after the first three days. I don't think they got 70% in the last 3.

There are always a few big coho around in the early season. I got a 9 pound fish in area 10 at the start of the season quite a few years ago, and there was that time that the fish checker at the ramp pointed out that my “chinook” that I got on the opener before the sun came up was actually a coho - so embarrassing!

Maybe they are just fish that for some reason did not go up the river and spent an extra year in the salt.

Glad to know I'm not the only guy in this forum who likes to get after kings in the inland salt.

Lost 2 and bonked an 18lb king, also released a probably 3# wild coho this weekend. Old skunk session this morning though.

Running a $15 zebco mooching reel. No freespool or anti reverse. Basically a fly reel with a beefy spool for mono. Been a lot more fun than my level winds.

Great day in MA9 yesterday. Much needed factory reset for the mentals. Hit beach 1 by 8:30 and the bite was on till about 10. Got to beach 2 by 10:30 that was less productive but did manage a few nice cutts. Beach 3 was a last minute decision based on tide that landed some hatchery coho. Only ran into one other angler at the last beach that had a great singing voice . If you're on here I promise I didn't start walking away because of it. I was already pushing the clock with my fam.

17 fish to net at the end of the day. White over olive clouser was the only fly used.
