Puget Sound

Hit the sound with @Kfish today. SRC cooperated when we found them
Though my hook to land ratio was abysmal.
Rezzies did not, one might call them finicky even though they gorged themselves feet from the boat on many occasions. Still enjoyable to get out on the water with active fish to cast too. You don’t get a lot of opportunities to cast to finicky fish on the sound. Most days if you see an active fish and make the cast it will result in a hookup. Though frustrating in the moment. Reminds me of my past life casting everything but the kitchen sink at finicky tailwater fish. It’s fun to work a bit to get a commitment.

The rezzies were even more picky this week, glad to have found some cutts along the way. Also good to see baitfish around mixed in amongst some fry. I guess with all that abundance they can afford to be snobs :)

β€œSearun cutthroat are the most beautiful salmon species in my opinion” - What I learned this weekend from an anonymous beach talker.

I suppose he isn't too far off, it's all Oncorhynchus! Not a joke one of the factoids that got me to major in Marine Biology was learning that Pacific Trout are closer related to Pacific Salmon than other trout

Ok, I’ll start calling them searun salmon or coastal cutthroat salmon. πŸ˜‰

Spending a couple days out of my comfort zone, rivers & streams, driving around fishing and camping in search of SRC. No luck yet but have found some sweet currents, seams and Eddie's. Swung/stripped this from above the driftwood to below where it petered out and man it felt good but nada. Fished some great water last night, no grabs, no sign of fish but known to produce when they are around. I do catch some fish now and again on my local beaches but really have no legit idea what the hell I'm doing in this game. Fun to see some new country and water tho and maybe learn a couple things. Back at it later after drying out and a nap.. Onward and Upward

I'm sure you'll get some good input here. Brian and others fish the sound way more than I do, but my input would be that spot doesn't have the rocks and oyster shells I like to see. That rip looks delicious, but I've always done better when the bottom is speckled and the rip isn't ripping quite so hard. Not sure if that helps or not. 😁

Love that you're beach bumming it! I'm jealous!

Hit the beach nearly every day for an hour or so over the last couple of weeks and have been doing pretty decent. They are quick little pods of fish that move up and down the beach. I have adopted the heron method, hold the fly and leader in my left hand and wait for them to show and try to get a cast off before they are gone again. Seems to be the method for me.
Took the boat out for a couple hours yesterday and today. Good numbers of fish around. The rezzies are starting to pull pretty hard. I’ve occasionally been catching something other than coho but not sure what they are. 12” and more slimy. Bigger spots on the back, but not black mouth. Anyways, alway fun on the water.

Dare I say it? Are you perhaps catching the firsts of the 2025 Huge Humpy Horde forecasted for Puget Sound? Back in 2023 @Divad posted a picture of a pink salmon caught in early May (see his picture below and link to that post)...

View attachment 147925I think you nailed it. Surprised to see them in area 13. I’ll try to take more photos. I’ve dropped my phone in the water a couple times plus I’m usually trying to untangle my self after spazzing out on the landing. Good call.

I agree with @skyriver that the pic may not represent an ideal SRC beach but I’d fish the sh*t out of it depending on time of year and MA. I love the grass in the water/at water edge and the current. Sometimes productive water is unproductive if fish are elsewhere chasing more abundant food and/or spawning.
