I think there's definitley some smoke in the air. At work this morning the sun, low in the eastern sky, was a distinct red disc that i could look directly at. Unlike yesterday morning when it was a oppressive orange fireball that made driving without a welding helmet almost impossible.
I’ll never forget the time someone made fun of me for releasing a dark chum. (Decent fish, 10-12lber) Of course he proceeded to bonk a snagged one and send his son over to threaten me after I confronted them. (He didn’t, he apologized for his parents bad behavior and asked me for advice to understand the rules)You’d be surprised. The white mold on the fins and backs of both pinks and chums that people keep from rivers really adds to the flavor, so I’m told.
When deep fried in sand, it’s even better.

Are QC issues with RIO lines common? Anytime I hear someone lamenting a fly line, it’s always RIO.

Yeah they have grown a pretty bad reputation recently, but I hoped it would last atleast a few months. I only bought it because it was deeply discounted, it’s a shame because it’s a nice casting line.
Do you folks ever wash your lines? I use CQS on all of my switch rods, I don’t put in the hours that most of you do but some of my lines are over a few years old. I rinse my spool in clean cool water then soak it for a few minutes, at the end of the week if I fished that is. If I have fish a lot I will soak my fly line in a bath of Dawn about two tablespoons to a gallon of warm water for about 1/2 hour. Then wind it back on the spool while pulling the line through a clean paper towel wet with clear water.
Not unless it's a floating line that doesn't float. But I don't think dirty line is causing the problem for me with CQS. I believe it is the actual use of the line that kills it. After about 20-30 hours of use, every CQS line I've tried begins cracking. I think it's related to whatever core/coating they're using that causes it to be the most slinky-like of fly lines. Never had those issues with SA or Airflo--or even tropical RIO lines.
I always give my reel a good rinse down with the hose after every trip to the salt. The cracks in the line are forming in the running line a few feet from the head which makes me think it's stress from casting and double hauling.
